We at VDB Coins are looking forward once again to attending our yearly show here starting a week from now. This is a super show: The show flyer calls it "the largest regional show in the Southeast next to FUN," with 500+ dealers and 335+ tables. Thursday April 16 is dealer setup starting at 1 pm and Early Birds starting at 3 pm. Friday-Saturday Aril 17-18 are general public, free admission/free parking 10 am-6 pm, Sunday April 19 10 am-3 pm.

We will be at Tables 205 and 207. Many well-known dealers will be present. For more information including the show flyer and dealer listing, go to https://gamoney.org/. We hope to see you there and that you'll come by and say hello and tell us who you are on this forum! We'll have lots of newps we acquired over the last year.

Anyone else planning on attending or setting up, please chime in here. Thanks, safe travels y'all. Kind regards, George / VDB Coins

I'm going, is it worth getting an early bird entry? Will all/most of the dealers be set up?

I would guess probably not worth it.
There is always the chance that it could be the best decision you ever made though.

@Russell12 @Flatwoods Lots of dealers set up on Thursday, but they don't let the dealers in until 1, so give them a couple of hours to set up and come around 2:30-3 pm. Many good deals can be had on the first day. Or early on Friday and Saturday (less so), which your Early Bird badge also lets you in for (8:30 am-on; general public gets in at 10). No guarantees of course, but if you have a good want list, these are prime times to knock some items off the list. Good luck! George

I'm not worried about someone buying a coin first, I'm more interested in less crowds, getting done sooner, and if all or most of the dealers are set up

Couple of question since I haven't been to a coin show in over 15 years. Are there metal detectors at the door and is carrying a concealed weapon allowed? Are there usually dealers that would be interested in purchasing silver eagles, random coins and rolls of 90 percent (dimes and quarters)? Do most dealers pay cash?
We are less than an hour drive from the show and I'm interested in moving most of my left over stuff. The complete sets are designated for my daughter and the grandkids so there is a lot of random stuff besides the silver.

I have a lot of random silver dollars in average shape. I worked in a coin shop back in the 70's and when a group like that came in it only took a few minutes to scan and make an offer so I don't know if dealers will take the time to spend a few minutes to give a quote.

    Thanks

@Klif50 There are no metal detectors that I know of but security is excellent, uniformed and plainclothes patrols, 24-hour cameras and guards, yes many dealers (including me) actively buy, and many pay cash including me. I don't know the laws concerning concealed weapons in Georgia but I'm sure some do carry. I would certainly make you a fair offer or point you to other reliable buyers. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick response. Let me know your table number and I'll look you up. I have a Georgia concealed carry permit (no longer required by the state but our church requires them for security team duties). See you on Friday. I don't worry about security within the show, it's going and coming from the parking lot and the long drive home that I am concerned about.

Thanks @Klif50, I am at Tables 205-207, turn right as you enter the hall, next to last row of four-top tables, ask for VDB Coins or the nice lady at the entrance can point you in the right direction. You can ask someone from the large security team to watch you as you leave, they're a bunch of great guys and gals. Kind regards, George

@Russell12 There are more than 500 dealers at 335+ tables, so there should be plenty of them around. Many try to be there at 1 pm Thursday (earliest we're allowed in), but some don't show up till Friday (mostly those with shorter drives). Some, most, who knows? Like I say, give the dealers a couple of hours to get in onThursday and get set up (it does take a while; I wish we could get in earlier) and you should be fine. Good luck! I hope you are having a great show George! My vertigo is not being kind to me and looking down at tables while walking the bourse is unfortunately not an option at the moment. I do look forward to a report and/or anything new that you might acquire this weekend! <3

My bride and I took a drive to the show yesterday. Came from Douglasville, GA, 110 miles each way. Got to meet George, a very wise and personable individual. He pointed out some dealers that had what I was looking for and away we went. Did our business and on dealer Wes from Empire said if I wanted to so more "slowed down" business I was welcome to visit his shop, about 16 miles away. Drove there and dealt with 3 of his workers and had a very pleasant time selling stuff that the show wasn't overly interested in. While I was there I saw a lady bring in her silver ware set and leave with a big check and an old man and I believe his daughter, with help, brought in about 10 wooden boxes each holding a multitude of 5 ounce silver bars. They were some sort of commemorative, I guess. They were still counting when we left.

I noticed they had a large sterling vase and that reminded me of when I worked at a shop in Maryland during the Hunt brothers wildness. Lady brought in a heavy sterling cremation urn. I took it, noticed it was heavy and opened the top to find it full of cremates. Told her I couldn't buy it with someone in it. She asked for the bathroom and off she goes. I hear the toilet flush 3 times and she comes out, goes to the sink and rinses it out. I asked her if she just flushed the individual and she said yes, she always hated the S** and what could she get for it. She walked out with $600 and a smile. I added it to the scrap piles and just shook my head. People are people.

The show is going today until 5 and for a few hours tomorrow. There is a silver buying/selling frenzy going on and there is a ton of jewelry being looked at and sold. Not sure how many collector coin deals were going on but the show is free with free parking so if you are within 100 or so miles you should make the trip. Look up George at VDB Coins while you are there.

    Twas a fun time.
Great to see George and other members, past and present.
I had planned on staying for the duration but I usually get hammered on dealer set up day.
Sold everything I really didn't want to. Almost.
All the top shelf stuff goes first it seems.
Guess I need to buy more. :)

    2 purchases from the show

First off, thanks a lot @Klif50 for the nice compliment, I'm glad I was able to help. I did help him by doing some advance homework, since I knew that some dealers have a very wide buy-sell spread on silver (especially 90%) and others, generally the larger dealers, can work on much narrower spreads and make up the difference with greater volume from more customers. Funny story @Klif50 about the cremated S**.

For me personally, the show was just plain HOT. Since I am down to just this one show per year and some dealers/customers are familiar with the kinds of material I carry (most coins with IMHO great eye appeal, better-date material, some type gold, hopefully some key dates and the occasional knockout Lincoln or Indian cent), even before I got through setting up on Thursday afternoon, I was "swooped" down upon and had sold quite a few great coins before the show even opened to the general public the next morning. And it continued that way almost through all day Friday and Saturday.

I saw quite a few old friends and acquaintances including @Flatwoods and @SurfinxHI and my old homeboys crowd from the Knoxville and Chattanooga shows, and met lots of great new dealers and customers! I think the market is absolutely vibrant, buoyed by the high PMs prices but still healthy without them. I also was heartened by more people than I expected saying they had visited our website, so one of my takeaways from the show this year is to do better at listing more new material more often! Stay tuned, and happy collecting! Kind regards, George / VDBCoins.com
