I just picked up these today. My pics aren’t great, but in hand the luster on them is incredible, particularly on the ‘78 and ‘94. Am I wrong in thinking they’re both 65 or better?

    Unfortunately, to me, they do not appear to be MS65 or better.

    You would probably get a few good grades on the coins. Graders don't like hairlines though which can affect the grade a lot.

    Sooner or later I'll get better at this! I bought them all below scrap value, so I'm in no danger of losing $. I know the Indian and $1 aren't high grades, just curious about the other 2.

    I'm not seeing anything that looks MS. Better pics might help but I'm seeing a little wear and hairlines...

    In today's market I would only buy raw gold if it came from a very reputable dealer who guaranteed authenticity.

    I was once bit but fortunately for me the auction's T&C guaranteed authenticity so I was able to recoup my money minus the TPG fees. That's when gold was only $1000 per oz.

    None of the coins are a 65 and some look fake.

    Hard to tell from the pictures (they are not optimal), but I would rate (guess) as follows:

    1874 $1.00: genuine, AU details, cleaned.
    1878 $2.50: genuine, MS63.
    1894 $2.50: genuine, MS63 to MS65 (depends on whether the cheek scuffs show up like that at every lighting angle).
    1928 $2.50: genuine, MS62, possibly cleaned.

    If you bought these for the gold scrap value (or less), then you did reasonably well.

    Small gold coins such as gold dollars and quarter eagles have been very heavily counterfeited so unless you're an expert authenticator, only buy raw gold coins from a trusted source. Based on your most excellent pics, they all appear to be genuine. If you got these for melt value, you did quite well.

    Late to the party but not surprised by the grades. I think the lighting is what made some think they were cleaned. Harsh lighting like this can have that appearance. Great coins!

    Did you read the results?

    Shouldn't it have the opposite effect from what you stated?
    OP buys gold coins at scrap. They grade with PCGS, mintstate grades.
    You would think this would "reinforces buying raw gold" instead.
