Let's see $40 from the mint or $70 from Walmart

    Mistakes are natural. But repeated mistakes without reflection are something else. That may be the “stupidity” he was referring to. In research, he admitted uncertainty openly. “If we knew what it was we were doing, it would not be called research, would it?” This shows humility. Even a Nobel laureate accepted doubt. That humility makes the quote less cynical and more observational.

    They are a private reseller. Buy or don't.

    The mint should be minting to demand at face value with "reasonable" extra cost for fancy paper and processing.

    So Walmart uses a third party, they do that for many products, they are still advertising it to their buying audience. Your comment is irrelevant, Walmart gets a nice cut of the sale price, just like EBay or Amazon for third party sellers.

    Walmart's collecting the payment. It's pretty much the same for everything else in the store. When you buy Wheaties at Walmart, it's not General Mills that's selling you the box of cereal.

    Still incorrect. In regard to these coins, its not that Walmart "uses a third party" - it allows third parties to sell on its online platform. But that's OK, accuracy is "irrelevant", right?

    Overcharging is not gouging unless the seller of the goods or services is in a monopolistic or oligopolistic position. Examples might be utilities, suppliers or hotels post-cataclysms - and the US mint when selling non-circulating coins to collectors of sets.

    It's not the same. It's more like ebay. Walmart doesn't stock or ship those items. They just get a percentage of sales from the sellers.

    Ebay and other resellers have been doing it for decades. I was just surprised that the national mint joined their ranks.
