Nicely toned 5 coin set in odd-ball in country folder. Manila paper has reacted with all the metals. I'm going to give them an acetone dip and get them in airtites. Anyone familiar with "Afran Stamp Co"? Peace Roy

    My 58 set is in genuine Philly Mint packaging. No clue about afran. My guess is its a repackager in home market. When I bought mine couple years back I never saw afran options, just Phillys. Some had absolutely ugly finish coins. Poor preservation and maybe zinc metal's volatility too. Philly Mint package is not amazing. Really worst I ever encountered. Coincidentally they used same scary looking staples circa 1958.

    Remember, in 1958, clad coinage hadn’t been invented yet, so these were solid CuNi (with some Zn), probably made in-house at Philly.

    I wonder if this alloy was being used by the USM for any other country?

    The Afran Stamp Company was a store that sold stamps and some coins in Manila, Philippines.

    I bought a few First Day Covers from them when I was actively collecting stamps, and also some of their in-house Philippine “mint” sets like yours, but later years (1963 or 1964).

    But here’s some information I found on the Internet about them:

    The Afran Stamp Company was a business operating from the mid-1930s through the early 1950s. It was owned by Mr. Antonio Martinez Franco, a lawyer who practiced in Manila and hailed from Cebu Island.

    The company’s name, AFRAN, is derived from the initial “A” of Antonio and the first syllable “Fran” of Franco.

    Yes, I had a bunch of FDCs from them. I might still.
