Sharing some cool Brazilian 960 Reis I just crossed from NGC

I told myself I was never going to do a series set ever again. Oh well.

Just got these crossover results back.

1814 B struck over 1808 8R (NGC 58 to PCGS 58)

1820 B struck over 1816 8R (NGC 58 to PCGS 58)

1822 R struck over 1806 8R (NGC 58 to PCGS 58)

I was looking for the Mexican coin underneath, maybe the last two have the Spanish crest under the Brazilian one?

Nice group! Are you collecting by date or under type?

I’m not sure whether they’re Mexican or not. Can’t see mint or assay marks. I was just IDing the undertypes through the visible “under” dates and the clarity of the pillars as 8R.

If I’m off on anything please let me know!

Not sure about the first one so far, but the middle one has what looks like the Lima mintmark before "STAB", while the last one has a visible Lima mintmark under the "A" in "STAB".

Nice group. As @threefifty pointed out, the last 2 coins are struck over Lima 8 Reales. You also mentioned the host of the secon coin being an 1816, but it's an 1815.

The first one was a bit tougher until I realized it was struck over a mainland 8 Reales, not a colonial one, as can be seen by "HISPANIARVM" on the reverse. Once that became obvious, the mintmark location seems to show a faint "S" for Seville.

    You guys are awesome/amazing.

Thanks @threefifty and @TwoKopeiki. Your input/expertise are appreciated!

Been trying to build this set with as many visible under dates/types/marks as possible. I guess I need to start by learning the difference between a 6 and a 5 :D

Thanks! By date. Trying to complete as much of it as I can with both eye appeal and as much undertype visibility as possible. In a few instances (such a a certain 1814 B I was lucky to acquire) I’ve let eye appeal be the sole driver even if there’s not a ton of undertype to see.

  • Lovely toning and eye appeal! Congratulations! Great undertype analysis as well!

Since I’m a pattern collector, I’ll suggest not to forget the 1809 pattern of this issue. It was struck at the Soho Mint in order to facilitate the sale of minting equipment to Brazil.

It exists in both bronze and silver, the silver being very rare and expensive.
