This medal strikes me as Exquisite in its design.

I noticed this medal in one of my auction searches and was struck with the beauty and simplicity of it, an allegorical and almost dreamy obverse with a very realistic rendition of the New York Crystal Palace on the reverse. Struck in Gilt White Metal it measures almost 74mm and has an edge design that I had never seen before.

Medals from this 1853 Exhibition are few and far between. Ironically, perhaps the most common medal associated with this fair, HK-8/8a, are actually British and dedicated to the original Palace in London. If anyone has a New York Crystal Palace medal, please, post some images.

Maywood.

Cool coin. London hosted the Great Exhibition in 1851, and Paris the Exposition Universelle in 1855. So maybe exhibitions were a big thing back then.

I didn't know the story of the New York Crystal Palace, fascinating story and what an awesome building it must have been, burned to a crisp in 1858 but the memory lives on.

    Love these medals.
I almost have to look away in fear I'll start collecting them. I know once that starts there is no turning back.

Below is another medal from the Exhibition, I've seen a few of these offered in the past.

    Beautiful.
I enjoy the heft and intrigant design of these early medals.
