At this juncture I am biting my tongue regarding ANACS.

In one week it will be 5 months since my coin-show submission. They have already missed two "estimated completion dates" and I'm feeling unloved at this point.
Months ago the website stated that they were running behind, but it has gotten to the ridiculous stage. No communications from the company and I would be willing to bet that it will be at about the 6-month period that they will update the completion date to some future date that cannot be met.

edit: Not bashing... Just providing facts

To be fair I think with the amount of coin shows ANACS does, they're bound to be crammed with submissions very often! Of course, you could always contact customer service...

What is this coin, token, or medal? Was it an esoteric coin, token, or medal that had to be sent to some expert to get their opinion on its authenticity or grade? Hopefully, they didn't lose it.

Always like the old soapbar holders. When I started collecting they were plentiful as the blue holders just started coming out.

That's cool! I might try to get my first soapbox but I'm not so sure yet.

Ten nice Lincoln cents that were also varieties. Most of them are varieties that are listed in the Red Book so those should be well-known [the submission directions required that they be listed in the Red Book]. Three coins of one variety, three coins of another variety and two coins of a third variety so those should be fairly quick. Last two were single-coin varieties. Each coin labeled with the name of the variety and the FS number.

The thought recently crossed my mind that they might be misplaced, hence my post.

Makes sense. I personally like the current ANACS slabs as they're a little more efficient with the grade also printed at the top, but I know they're over all sort of unpopular. The soapbox holders are really cool though! I find it interesting how they're small yet thick.

I collect Morgan VAMs -- primarily 1921-Ps and Ds. (Feel free to laugh now.) I am enthusiastic about ANACS because:

PCGS attributes only 2 of the Ps by specific VAM number (and gets one of them wrong almost all of the time.)
ANACS attributes all 435 of them and, at least so far IMO, is virtually never wrong.

PCGS attributes 6 of the Ds by specific VAM number (and sometimes gets 3 of them wrong).
ANACS attributes all 234 of them and, at least so far IMO, is virtually never wrong.

    When in doubt, don't.

With any TPG your mileage may vary IMO. There is no substitute in knowing how to grade and look at coins. I have about half a slab box of Anacs coins. They are all nice for the grade and not very expensive material. They do well for me at shows too.

Quite a few of my Daniel Carr Fantasies arrived in ANACS roll top slabs.
Earlier ANACS version roll top, can include his live, hand signed tag on back side, a favorite of mine.
Later roll top versions have printed signature. And ANACS have two or maybe three special labels for his array of products.

The TV informercial coin guy Mike of CSN and HSN offers many products, like "ADVANCE RELEASE" in ANACS plastic.
I see his offers when I cannot sleep and I channel surf the TV.
No clue if PCGS or NGC would cross an ANACS' "ADVANCE RELEASE" label into their plastic, anyone know ???
Due to infomercial I only recently became aware of this special label for "20 advanced buyers of USMINT products" that are for coins issued to them well ahead of the public release date.

There's about a 1,000 miles between ANACS/NGC/PCGS and everyone else. There may be a couple miles between ANACS and the other two?

Yeah, I think ANACS really isn't that far off from the grading quality of NGC and PCGS. Of course though, people seem to highly prefer PCGS. Even NGC coins go for slightly less! IMO, I think PCGS and NGC graded coins should go for about the same as each other and maybe like a 5% or so reduction for ANACS.

Not me. PCGS's standards are different from NGC's and ANACS's standards for the series and grades I collect. NGC coins often downgrade when crossed to CACG or PCGS. One NGC coin in AU55 was graded AU details -cleaned by PCGS. I have NGC coins with CAC green stickers that PCGS would rarely grade that high because they have too much wear for the grade. ANACS coins that I've submitted for crossover have always downgraded, though I didn't crack them out before submitting them.

Oddly enough, PCGS has the lowest standards (highest grades) I've seen for midgrade circulated Newfoundland halves.

    .
And of course, my ANACS AU55 1878 was upgraded by CACG to AU58, undermining everything I wrote above about ANACS.

From what I've seen, ANACS is perceived to be a little looser than the other major grading services on MS Morgans and Peace dollars, and maybe they are. They're generally accurate and consistent when it comes to circulated bust and seated halves, though.

Decided to take my first photo of a coin in an ANACS holder because I wanna improve my coin photography. I haven’t figured out anything beyond full-slab photos unfortunately, but what do you think?

The 1878 above aside, that has not been my experience with ANACS slabs. The other ANACS OWH I submitted, an ANACS XF45 1843 WB-27, was given a "details" grade. My ANACS VG10 1842-O small date was downgraded to PCGS VG8. My ANACS VF35 1886 was given a VF30 grade by PCGS. My ANACS F15 1873-CC WA downgraded to PCGS F12. And an 1856 in an ANACS OWH went from XF40 to "XF details - cleaned."

ANACS is excellent value for moderately priced coins. I haven’t submitted in a few years but they used to have a $10/coin submission minimum of ten coins and I was able to submit at a local show.

  • KSorboKSorbo Posts: 170 ✭✭✭

I don’t have much experience buying or selling ANACS coins. Most of my collection is PCGS/NGC. From my observation their grading seems decent and I like all their holders. I would be hesitant to buy an ANACS coin if there was a significant price difference between the grade it was in and the next grade down. More so than for a circulated 19th century US type coin for example, or something in a lower MS grade.

If it’s a higher value coin (more than a few hundred dollars) I start to wonder why it isn’t in a PCGS/NGC holder. If it’s a 4 figure coin I really wonder.

This is based on my perception of potential resale value. Am I on the right track here?

I personally like ANACS but I want to know what the general consensus is!

I love the old one small white ones with the blue text and gold ana foil label. These were, in my experience, on par with prevailing NGC/PCGS standards of the day. The small white holders with green back ground lettering started in the 1990s and there are some good coins in them. Sometimes they are a little loose, but usually nothing super crazy. Later iterations I am less impressed with, but still think they are generally good for counterfeit detection. Even with the more conservative older holders, you must always use due diligence (as with any grading service).

  • ShurkeShurke Posts: 707 ✭✭✭✭✭

I don’t have a ton of experience with ANACS, but I cherrypicked two Mercury dimes in their holders. Both upgraded by a grade at different services. One went from 62FB to 63FB at PCGS. The other went from 64 to 65FB at CACG.

  • WalkerfanWalkerfan Posts: 10,166 ✭✭✭✭✭

I think they’re accurate, but I tend to avoid them and buy only PCGS and NGC, because those are the ones that the market recognizes the most.
