Politics aside, legality aside, the one thing people are over looking is when a figure is placed on a coin it is to recognize, honor and memorialize the individual for lifetime achievements which shaped society for the better.
Between this and the proposed $1 coin it is a living individual looking to recognize and honor themself.
So Coolidge was being honored? I'm 100%: sure that was NOT the point of the sesquicentennial half. Same with the Alabama governors.

If you don't like the Coolidge counter example, which is a first-and-last coin, perhaps we could talk about monarchs. They are put on coins as symbols of national unity. So, whatever you feel the motivation is for this coin, it is demonstrably false that "when a figure is placed on a coin it is to recognize, honor and memorialize the individual for lifetime achievements which shaped society for the better. " i will NOT, however, insult you for the error of fact. I simply point out the flaw in the statement.
In the case of Coolidge and Kilby, the point was simply to acknowledge the time period. In the case of Ethel Kennedy, the point was to recognize her LIVING contribution. And, of course, in the (non-US) case of monarchs, the point is to use them a symbols of national unity.
That is true, regardless of what you think of the proposed coin. I'm generally not in favor, by the way. Although I sense you don't care what I think. 😅

As far as the design, being a Philadelphian, I'm not too swift on the idea of the Liberty Bell being practically shunted to the perimeter of the reverse of the coin.
As for the obverse, the figure reminds me too much of Lloyd Bridges' character in the movie spoof, "Airplane".
I think the point is that the Eagle is bringing liberty...

Lol. They probably aren't the only anti-monarchy groups in the commonwealth.
For sure. If people in general weren't so clueless about who/what is on their coins, a lot more might be upset about it.
I do sometimes think that it is a little odd that countries like Canada and Australia haven't moved away from the monarch. I wonder if it is in some commonwealth treaty or something.

Not really a fan of the size or obverse design, I think there's many more flattering and/or attractive depictions of our president. The size should be 1/2 oz or 1 oz on a standard AGE planchet.

I think that the law that provides the loophole that permits this coinage requires 24kt gold, so they could use American Buffalo planchets.

I agree, it shouldn't be that controversial. They were depicted on those commemoratives simply because they were in office at the time. Following that precedent, the current president of the United States is being depicted on commemoratives being issued this year.
It will be interesting to see what our hosts think of individuals using their forum to make death threats against the President.
I think it's interesting that you think it's primary meaning is that threat...
Oxford English Dictionary, "86" is American slang originating around the 1930s to indicate an item is out of stock or, from the 1950s, to eject or refuse service to a person. It is commonly used as a verb (86'd) to mean discarding, getting rid of, or banning someone from a establishment.
Verb (86'd/86ing): To eject, remove, or throw something away.

No one is buying the gaslighting. Everyone knows what you meant.
I stopped buying gaslighting when electric lights were installed.
That said, I don't think the Captain meant it to be a threat.
Everyone who has been paying attention the last 2 years knows exactly what 8647 means, and it has only one meaning when you add the "47" to it. We used to all agree it's bad form to wish for political assassinations. If we were talking about anyone else, no one would be making excuses for it.
