What's the longest you've gone without buying a coin to fund a major purchase...

lkeneficlkenefic Posts: 9,283 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just as the title says—how long have you waited for a major coin purchase?

Did you fund it by selling other coins, or was it the result of steadily building up your “coin budget” over time… or a combination of both?

Also, have you ever passed on other coins to stay focused on a bigger target?

I’m currently back to playing the long game on a couple of pieces, and it reminded me of when I was searching for a straight-graded VF–XF Classic Head Large Cent with clean fields and decent color for my 7070 type set. I waited nearly a year—and was trying to stay under $2k.

In the end, I settled for a details coin, but paid a details price, which freed me up to pursue other coins as well. That said, I still passed on a really nice Trade Dollar and a few others along the way (including a 1917 Type 1 Standing Liberty).

Collecting: Dansco 7070; Middle Date Large Cents (VF-AU); Box of 20;

Successful BST transactions with: SilverEagles92; Ahrensdad; Smitty; GregHansen; Lablade; Mercury10c; copperflopper; whatsup; KISHU1; scrapman1077, crispy, canadanz, smallchange, robkool, Mission16, ranshdow, ibzman350, Fallguy, Collectorcoins, SurfinxHI, jwitten, Walkerguy21D, dsessom.

I've been trying to get a Tibet Pick#2 for 25 years. Ever since I let one get away.

I've never saved up for a purchase. I don't do sets, so there aren't any coins I need. I only buy what I like, and only if I have the money to do so at the time I'm considering a purchase.

I would say six months to a year.

The only time I’ve ever sold coins was when I upgraded.

Yes, I have passed on Coins to keep focus on the bigger fish/picture.

Me either, but in my case for what I primarily collect, I have to buy it when the almost always one coin (for the date/mint/denomination) becomes available. My advance notice is limited to the time window between online lot posting and the sale. Sometimes there are multiple auctions in close proximity, but (very) infrequently.

I've never taken a break to save for a "major" purchase. The longest I've gone without a purchase is probably less than two months.

A "major" purchase would be anything over $1K, for me. That being said...it's been years since I dropped that kind of money on a coin.

I've slowed my purchases after a large purchase, but not to save up before a large purchase. If the large purchase comes available perhaps once every few years, one has to be ready to move when the coin is announced for sale.

I let one get away recently. Bills come first if I want to eat and keep a roof over my head. That's the way it is. Very few people actually collect the coin....

At the moment I am over subscribed on multiple 250th USMINT products, so I stopped acquiring other items.

A $95 error coin crossed my path & that's it for last 3 months. I'm faced with another 7 or 8 months shopping hiatus to go.

Don’t have the patience. When I’m
up against a major purchase and don’t want to spend the dough, I go in another collecting direction. Not a great habit, but I have a lot of diverse coins as a result.

I don’t really go on hiatus to save up, necessarily, but I really prefer to buy in person so I’ve gone over a year between getting to go to a show or shop and finding something I want.
If the budget increases (which I keep thinking is going to happen, and then it doesn’t) I’ll get comfortable online buying again.

...there was that time at the coin show when I sprung for the $14 hamburger...half of my coin money gone...I'll never make a mistake like that again...

Einstein’s view of God was non-traditional and pantheistic, focusing on the harmony, order, and intelligibility of the cosmos rather than a personal deity. His quotes reveal a profound respect for the universe’s mysteries, a belief in rational laws, and a moral philosophy grounded in compassion and understanding, bridging science and spirituality.

“My religion consists of a humble admiration of the illimitable superior spirit who reveals himself in the slight details we are able to perceive with our frail and feeble mind.”

Money is not the issue, finding the coin is or more accurately the coin with the photo cert.

Need a Barber Half with ANACS photo certificate. If you have one for sale please PM me. Current Ebay auctions

I usually pack a bottle of water and some nuts and an apple, so I don’t pay stupid money for food at a show. Then turn around and spend $800-1000 on a large cent like it’s nothing….

To the OPs point, no I’ve never saved up for or budgeted for a special coin. Mentally, yes, knowing I had profits from a stock, etc, that covered a a big portion made a purchase easier to justify. But I always have dry powder for when the right coins show up.
