Kind of a fun return to the roots with my kid. Dansco Kennedy Album ONLY from bank boxes

I thought this would be kind of a fun thing to share. My daughter is starting to show an interest in coins, and half dollars in particular. She seems to like them for the same reason I did when I was 10; you just don't ever see them. About a year ago, we started going through bank boxes of halves and trying to fill a Dansco album from coins that we found. So far everything we've added has come from the bank, but I DO plan to cheat a little and buy a 70-D. It's a been a fun thing to do together, and look forward to AND dread finishing it up.

A few things I've learned:

My God did they mint a ton of 1972 and bicentennials

You really CAN (rarely) find silver in bank boxes. I think we've found a total of 4 x 90% and around 10 x 40% out of 5 or 6 boxes. Amazingly, 3 of the 4 90% coins were Franklins.

It is interesting how many mint set only coins and proofs make their way to a bank eventually.

Fun way to put a set together.

  • Now THAT is awesome. Somebody in our club is plugging a Euros album one by one from circulation during trips to Europe. It's just so much fun to watch someone enjoying the journey rather than just throwing a bunch of money at a process that could be completed in one day sitting in front of a laptop.

That's awesome! I hoped my daughter would have gravitated towards Kennedy Halves, but she liked the bigger shiny silver dollars and opted for Peace Dollars.... with birthday/Christmas/allowance money and what the "Tooth Fairy" would bring. Silver was only ~$5/oz at the time...

I did the same thing when I used to search bank boxes. It was fun! It took a couple years to finally find the silver 1970. B)

This is really neat! I'm impressed by what's been accomplished so far and by having your daughter involved in the set assembly. That will always be a special set for both of you.
