Not to be confused with the late Hunter S. Thompson.
Thank you. For those who might be interested, there’s a good 3 minute video near the bottom of the linked article.

I wonder what he is going to do with those 500 coins. It says they were struck with gold from the ship so I guess they were from melted bars?
Yes that is correct They melted down a number of ingots recovered from the ship to provide the metal for the coinage

I love how MSN described the 1857-S double eagles as “1857’s”, with an apostrophe.
As to Thompson, I wonder (even if he does still have a secret stash squirreled away somewhere) whether it was all worth a decade of his life spent in prison. 🙄
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
Thank you for posting the link - I should have done that as part of my post.😬

You can bet there was more at stake than reported.
Talk about passive income, he must of been the happiest guy in there watching old double over the past year 😂.

@PeakRarities Right?!
Can you imagine living his life now though? He will likely be under surveillance and may have an extremely hard time liquidating any of his gold…
Oh he’ll have to lay low for years possibly, prying eyes will be-a-plentiful.

If anything, he might just get the heck outta dodge very quickly, he’ll be on a sailboat to Antigua or Guam lol. He might not be on the no fly list, but he’ll be on the flying surveillance list for sure.

Murderers have gotten less time and this was a civil case. Not that I condone a business rip-off but seems very harsh.
He's 73.

Courts take contempt seriously. This might be the extreme. But I was once in a jury for a contempt charge related to a restraining order. There was no complaining witness. The couple were dating again. Every witness was uncooperative and the court insisted on going through with it. The defendant, who was in the wind, was looking at 5 years for living with his boyfriend by invitation. The court wouldn't drop it even though the boyfriend wanted to

Yeah, if he's planning on doing something fun with the rest of his life, he doesn't have time to waste.
I have one of the commemoratives minted from the gold bars. I also have the box and booklet, although I'm not sure where they are. The coin went into the SDB and the other materials went into a box somewhere. I guess that reduces the value by five bucks or so.
Wait a minute, he was never even sentenced? They were allowed to just hold him on contempt until he told them? 11 years for contempt is crazy.

Here's my share of the treasure.
The real play would be to have two boats. The one "he's on
" that ironically sinks, and the one that gets him away.
Don't need a helmet, got a hard, hard head.
