Jose Canseco x Tanner Jones Card Series — Show & Tell

Phone rings

Hello?

Hey, Tanner? This is Jose Canseco! How are you?

*Nearly chokes

======================

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that the two things I love most in this hobby are creating custom cards, and collecting Canseco cards.

When the opportunity came to where both of these things could possibly intersect, I was beside myself, and worked hard to make it happen. Being able to collaborate with my favorite player and create a special set of his cards to become a part of the Jose Canseco collecting ecosphere that I love so much – a dream come true! Shohei Ohtani himself could reach out and it wouldn’t be as big to me. Nor, Babe Ruth … but then again, I suppose that’d be terrifying if that happened.

It all started when my friend Carlos and I were talking about a year ago. Carlos happens to be close friends with Jose, and is the master of setting up autograph sessions. Talks didn’t really go anywhere, until about a year later, this past October. It was at that point, things started gaining traction. The whole process has been a great learning experience for me, as this is really the first time I’ve offered a major “product” like this, and it just happens to be a product that, as a collector, I absolutely love! From teasers, to pre-launch, to actually launching (intentionally yesterday, on Jose Canseco Day – 3/3) it was so much fun! Nerve-wracking? Absolutely. Terrifying? Definitely. Worth it? 100%.

Here’s what I first posted …

Then the day prior to launch …

I’m VERY happy to announce this project Jose and I have been working on together:

The Steroid Collection – a limited series of cards featuring Jose’s autograph and personally worn workout gear!

There are 33 boxes total that will be made with one slabbed card per box. The serial number breakdown is as follows: /25, /5, /2, and 1/1.

I decided to go above and beyond with this, and do some things that card companies don’t typically do. As you can see, the front doesn’t have just a plain square with a relic. The relic itself is designed into the card behind him.

Not only that, the back is foiled up like the front is, features a picture of the back of Canseco AND you can see the relic as well!

The silver holofoil version shown above is the “base” (#/25) card. Here is the 1/1 with gold holofoil:

And the box? Oooh, I’m excited about the box…check it out! Here is the artwork on the front, back and inside…

Because I really want this to be a great experience for everyone, I am sprinkling in a few exclusive SSP minis to hide in a some of the boxes.

Perhaps the coolest thing is this: Jose has agreed to do a personalized video shout-out for one lucky buyer who hits the video redemption!

As you know, I’ve been creating custom cards for quite a while now. This is my very first actual product drop like this. The plan is to do multiple cards in this series, and drop them every couple months or so with him. Some people have already committed to purchasing the entire series. It was a significantly larger amount of work than the other cards I do, but because I was doing this with Jose, I really wanted to go all out.

Launch day was Jose Canseco Day (March 3rd … 3/3 … get it?) at 8:33 AM, and 19 of the 33 boxes sold the first 24 hours! I wasn’t sure what to expect, but am grateful how it went.

I was a web developer for about 23 years before going full-time creating cards, but making these boxes available for sale required me to put my web dev hat back on – let me tell you – I’m happy I’m not doing websites anymore! 🙂

Speaking of which, here is the shopping cart page I setup for it. If you’d like to grab one of the remaining boxes, they can be had here!

    that's a great pair!

Should be 10's. pulled from rack packs. Perfect corners, centering is actually BETTER than scans show, no print dots. Surfaces are perfect. One has microscopic tilt, but not enough to knock it down in my opinion.

I got a 10 on a McGriff from the same rip. I think PSA might limit you to one that gets a "10" per 25 cards or so.

Might have to crack and resubmit.

    Thank you.

I picked up a box of Rack packs and really thought I hit the jackpot when i got 2 "perfect" Cansecos AND 2 "perfect" McGriffs.

It's frustrating when 10's go for $700.00 and 9's go for $100.00. I'm not selling either of these for $100.00.

It is the L/R centering there I think Joe as they are a little diamond-cut. Would look nice with auto!

    joke to follow.

It's hard to get excited about a One of One if it doesn't have a real diamond embedded in the card.

    Joke completed.

I like to see players get involved in the hobby. Tanner, how much input did Jose himself have in developing/designing the product? I think it would be cool if he took an active role.

Me too! Jose was really easy-going on this. The main input he had in a first iteration was "why do we have a box with a piece of material that is covering up a lot of my picture?" I told him collectors love personally used stuff, and I want to elevate this above all the "auto only noise." He said "if you think they'll sell better like this, then let's do it!"

I decided to make a change anyway, and actually integrated the relic into the design itself so his picture wasn't blocked. I showed him and he said love it!

He was involved in picture selection and such as well, and thankfully wasn't "that" customer who said "move this 3 pixels to the right ... now down 5 pixels...". I mean, I would've happily done it, but like I said, he was very easy going.
