1979 Topps #1 Batting Leaders Carew/Parker PSA 9

I paid up for this beast because they rarely ever look this nice. Two HOFers on the front and only four on the back. I wish PSA cared because they would have fixed the slightest bit of crookedness of the of the card in the well but they are not collectors so we shouldn't expect that much out of them.

    LOVE it!

That is one interesting group of batting leaders on the back too. If you gave me 100 years I'm not sure I would be able to guess half those were in the top 10. Cheo and Madlock for sure, but Burroughs and Clark?!?

Beautiful card. I'm just 4 cards away from having every 1979 Hall of Famer in PSA 9 condition. I'm very aware of the difficulties of finding legit centered 9's from this set. Well done.

Its nice to see Sweet Lou finished 4th in the AL Batting Title in 1979. If you ask most Yankee fans that watched the Yankees in the late 70's, Piniella was one of the top 3 Yankees you would want at bat if the game was on the line. Top 3 in no particular order was Munson, Reggie, and Sweet Lou.

I was a huge Yankees fan in 79! I was a big Munson, Jackson and Randolph fan. I love Willies 79 Topps card. Loved watching WTXX Channel 11 Rizzuto and Bill White! We could get it in Hartford, CT.. Brings back a lot of memories.

79 was the worst year for me in sports. In August of 79 Munson died and to this day he remains my favorite sports athlete. A true and complete team player.

I remember the day like it was yesterday. I saw him play at Yankee Stadium and Fenway a few times as a kid. I was at the game where Jackson and Martin got in the fight.

Wow that's awesome. I watched that game on NBC. I remember the Sox killing us in that game. Do you remember what player Martin sent out to right field to replace Reggie?

I remember being in Right Field seats 10-15 feet in from the Pesky Pole. The Sox fans were yelling and throwing things at Reggie all game and it got to the point where I think he said something to Martin and that pissed him off and they started to fight. I was 9 almost 10 at that point and was probably the only person in Fenway yelling for Reggie. I don’t remember him getting replaced. I would have guessed Paul Blair or Roy White.. Is Guidry correct?

It was Paul Blair. He went out to right filed and told Reggie that Martin was pulling him from the game. Jackson ran to the dugout and that's when the argument started with Reggie and Billy.

Martin made Reggie look bad…replacing him in the middle of an inning.

That happened to me as a HS senior in an American Legion game after a throwing error in a drizzling rain when the ball was wet. And I was PISSED and let my coach know it too.

I was certainly not Reggie Jackson in any real or imaginary way.

Another great moment around this time was the huge brawl the Yankees and Boston had. You can actually watch the video on YOUTUBE. Piniella slid into Fisk at home plate which started a brawl that ended with Nettles punching and putting Bill SPACEMAN Lee on the DL.

I don't remember that unfolding. I just remember them going at it in the dugout! If I remember the night before the Red Sox lead off with 4 consecutive HR's.
