It's not the same coin. The one from the 'bay has a slight planchet flaw at the rim by the F.

    Also has a different year!
I was trying to compare the coin, not to say they were the same.

lol I see, somehow I skimmed right over the most obvious indication. :D Silly me.

Kinda proves a point that they do look the same. However these finite details that TDN speaks of had me googling "proof fabric" and so this satiny finish could be diminished in photos as well as the basin or depth of strike leaving only one other characteristic to judge from, sharpness of strike.

The crispiness in Liberty looks the same in both coins to me but I have very limited experience whereas he has looked at thousands so, I should prolly take the under as well.

One thing almost certain (based on the pic) is it should grade high in the MS dept. if not a proof.

@BUFFNIXX hasn't been here since late January, so we probably won't get an answer anytime soon.

I agree. I only gave it a 65 because the pic made it look dark.

....................and I know grading from pics can be problematic.

Sorry to have been away for so long. This turned out to be a little more complicated. I got a second identical 1913 type 1
buffalo nickel from the same seller which was loudly claimed to be UNCIRCULATED by the seller and it is an identical twin to the first one that we were talking about here. These two coins both have the same type of tarnish and look to me as if they actually were touching one another to pickup the same type of corrosion. I wound up sending the second coin to ICG first along with 3 other coins and I just found out that this second coin was graded matte proof PR-64! I will get the other one out today before the post office closes. I am hoping it will grade matte proof PR-65! If I get the package from ICG Monday which is when I am supposed to get it I will post the picture of the slab here. And then when the other one, the first one pictured herein, comes back I will post the second one.

So there are two... was the second one also an auction?
Just to get this straight- The first coin, that is the one in the original post? It is being sent to ICG after the second coin, which has not been shown here? I thought the first one was going to CACG, what happened to that?

I decided to send to ICG and I am glad I did because they graded it straight and gave it a PR-64. Right now I am trying to get the photos posted over here. These are from the auction where i got it on ebay.

This is the pictures of the one coming back from ICG that is the second coin and was graded matte proof 64 by ICG.
It is already in the slab and is graded proof-64.
I was very surprised that ICG gave it a pr64 as I thought the one biggie corrosion spot above "FIVE CENTS" might have put it into the details grade giving it something like "impaired matte proof, corrosion, pr60".

    Nice Cherrypicks!

I once received a 1883 NC Liberty Nickel from an ebay seller who listed it as MS. Based on the pictures, I thought it was just a nice, well-struck MS. When I received it, it was in a coin envelope with the word "proof" in pencil - it graded PR64 - not really a "cherrypick", more like a "luckypick".

i would call it both a lucky pick and a cherry pick for sure
those 1883 no cents nickels are really nice too.

The first one pictured is the one in the original post -- the second one has the black spot above FIVE CENTS.
The second one was also in an auction from the same seller as the first one pictured above at the top.
I changed my mind about the grading service and decided to send it to ICG they had a better 5 day rate and i sent 3 other coins with this one. They got it done in less than 5 days. I have used them in the past and like their capsule.

I would be far more interested in what CACG thinks of these coins than ICG's opinions.

I think that ICG probably does about as good as CACG in determining whether or not a coin is a proof or a business strike.
And I was quite pleased with the pr-64 grade that the second coin got. So it turned out to be a good choice.

I assume you bought these two coins from Hunting for Treazure or other such eBay factory that IMO often buys details coins, cracks them out and sells them raw to a group of buyers that is hoping for a score (many of those buyers clueless as to the factory business model).
Both coins look to have some serious enough issues to keep them out of straight holders at PCGS, CACG or NGC.
If you get these coins in a straight PCGS or CACG holder, I will be happy you proved me wrong.

    Hello Breakdown
Thanks for your interest and your replies. yes you are correct as to where these coins came from. I am supposed to get the number two coin back today in a pr-64 holder. I got that info on-line from ICG.

above is the reverse of the ICG slab for coin number two
(note biggie carbon spot above the V in FIVE of the denomination)

Above is the obverse of the ICG slab for coin number two
(for 1913 type 1 ICG has slabbed 1053 coins in mint state and 17 coins in proof0
Coin number one is on the way to ICG now

You can tell this is coin 2 buy looking for the biggie carbon spot over the V in the denomination FIVE CENTS.

All was ok except they forgot to put "Type 1" on the slab, but i will let that slide since everything else turned out so well.
coin one is supposed to arrive at ICG this Thursday.

Update: coin number one will arrive at ICG this morning. (wednesday) April 8.
It has now arrived and is being processed into their system.
