California Jock Tax and the Super Bowl
in Sports Talk
Why would the NFL have the Super Bowl in a State where the players end up paying more in tax than they get for playing in the game?

NFLPA is the weakest players union in major USA sports. Some players have bonuses in their contract but its still lost money having to be their and get taxed for the week. Same things going to happen next year

If I'm the players union I'm refusing to play in any Super Bowl in California ever again

go to Cali, win the Bowl, make 178k, it disappears and you receive a 71k tax bill
who wouldn't sign up for that
A take off on the Beatles song "Taxman":
If you try to play, I 'll tax your feet,
If you try to run, I 'll tax your cletes
Cause I 'm the Taxman
And your playing for no one but me.
They charge you that for the view of the Pacific Ocean. 😛
There are a couple articles out there after the Super Bowl talking about this. I saw one on fox business and another on Forbes. Soon to be picked up everywhere.
These are promoting an incorrect understanding of how this works.
The concept is that high paid athletes will have to pay more from their salary pie for time spent in CA preparing for the Super Bowl than they will receive in compensation for the game itself. This is true however it’s not at the expense of their overall compensation because they are still being taxed a prorated portion of their salary.
They’re not losing money. They are making additional incremental income which will be taxed appropriately based on where they play.
The real criminal here for wealthy people who earn significant income from business or employment activities is the SALT deduction changes imposed at the Federal level. The only entity that actually makes it financially relevant as to where this income is earned from a player’s perspective is the IRS. I suspect many of these guys are not realizing that income directly as an individual though and by the time it’s taxed there have been significant deductions applied.
he basically paid a quarter mil for the right to make 178k. Cali divided his duty days over the entire season, then applied that percentage to his annual salary at their very special top marginal rate of 13.3%. then, they go have fun with his money. no offense to anyone who lives there, as i've been to California many times and enjoyed myself, but that state digs into absolutely everything they can get their hands on and takes as much as humanly possible. and this year my state will make 100,000 new friends.
In NYS many state workers, and others, once their pensions are nailed down they migrate to the Carolinas or Florida. Taking their NYS earned booty to those states. Thereby improving those states economy via their spending and leaving the ones left behind to pick up the lost tax revenue slack.
A true football player that loves the game and plays for the love of the game, should be happier to be a super bowl champion or to at least play in the biggest game to make less money wherever the game is played, any player that comes out and complains about having to play higher taxes to play in the biggest game shows they are in it for the money.
Yea but they might get to meet a famous movie star there.
That would be a priceless experience. 🙄
They love the game and love playing for the game as long as they are getting paid
Don't kid yourself, its money first.
The game comes second
