Sorry for your loss. I have been shipping some low value coin lots lately and I always wonder why the USPS puts a big azz label on the package that says the price of shipping. When potential thieves see a high-priced label on your package they know there is something of high value inside. DUH!!!

Use private insurance and you won't have a label screaming high value.

Or if you buy a label online, you also have the option of not displaying the price on the label.

That is so true. I just had a FedEx employee sign my name back in Michigan for $10k in gold and leave it on my porch. Meanwhile I’m in Arizona. I’d be S.O.L. if It had turned up missing since “But you signed got it!”

You could prove that that's not YOUR signature, no?

Possibly, but why should he have to go through the hassle.

The package presumably required a signature. Given this, the driver should have gotten a legitimate signature, or left a door tag.

Because HE didn't sign for it. Does UPS et al believe that they are off the hook when one of their employees forges a signature?

Then again why have deliveries if you're not home to accept them?

I realize that the recipient did not sign for the package. Per his post, the driver did.

Have no idea what would be involved in establishing that a driver forged a signature. My point was simply that it would have been a hassle for the recipient. A hassle that 'could/should' have theoretically been avoided if the process was followed.

Back to your point. It is likely to have happened, but I am not aware of an instance in which a delivery company was held accountable for a forged signature, or how it was proven. Are you able to share a story?

No story to share. If the package was stolen and your claim was denied then what would you do? You'd want to go after someone, no?

I would, of course, challenge the denial.

I am NOT disputing your point. In fact, I think it is safe to assume that most recipients would pursue a stolen package that should not have been delivered due to the lack of a valid signature.

We are simply approaching this hypothetical scenario from different perspectives. You are planning a reactive strategy should it occur (i.e., challenge the signature). Meanwhile, I am saying that the process, when followed, would proactively prevent the situation from occurring.

Note - this is my last public post on this topic. In short, I do not want to derail the OP's thread, or make it difficult for others to 'follow'. If you want to explore the subject further, we can move to DM's. :)

There have been other digressions, but if one sees a driver one might ask him or her IF THEY KNOW what UPS' or FEDEX's policy is when they sign your name and the package goes missing.

Also if you know that you won't be home on delivery day you can go online and request a different delivery day, tho I think there is a charge for that. Sorry for the OP, but I expect that his recovery prospects are slim. But you never know. Sucks that there is so much dishonesty and slovenliness in the world.

Again, it all goes back to the greed of the American corporation and ultimately driven by Wall Street.

Consumers searching for the fastest shipping/lowest price available are responsible, too. Businesses will attempt to supply this demand. Registered mail is pretty safe, but people regularly complain about it because it's too slow or the tracking doesn't work very well.

Aren’t you set up at basically every major show? Why didn’t you wait for Long Beach and just hand it to pcgs, show grade it there, and pick up there? I never ship to the grading companies any longer, too much worry and waste of money/time.

As many have said, the shipping companies don't seem to care and, in our case, make it easy for people to steal simply because they are too lazy to actually do their job; one Amazon driver literally left 2 of the big package totes sitting in the floor full of packages, some of which didn't even belong in the complex.

It’s not (necessarily) that the drivers are lazy. It’s more like the shipping companies track them like crazy and demand a certain delivery rate or the driver is toast. Drivers are rated on deliveries not losses. They are simply trying to keep their job by getting the most packages “delivered” to meet the quotas.

Again, it all goes back to the greed of the American corporation and ultimately driven by Wall Street.

Corporations exist to make money for stockholders. The greedy part and the wall street part are good. It is honest market economics, and it is not a problem.

The problem is lack of accountability and that is market driven. As people accept these losses, the companies respond in kind.

A very nice, rare and distinct coin. I hope it turns up and a thief is prosecuted. I don't know the security processes of FedEx, I would hope they have internal investigative options.

In my experience, all the couriers seem like they could give a rat's arse about damaged or missing packages. I've had a handful of issues in the past couple of months, including extensive delays with no scans, crushed boxes, and a shipment of 800 1-ounce silver rounds that a driver marked delivered and signed himself, then vanished. No one cares, there's no oversight, and no accountability. The major insurance companies need to join together and start litigating; there needs to be pressure applied in order for anything

Show them your driver's license. It's a government issued photo identity card and it has your signature on it.

The signature on your driver's license likely looks nothing like your signature on a FedEx or USPS electronic device at the door. You sign with your finger on a computer screen.

All comments reflect the opinion of the author, even when irrefutably accurate.

So you're basically SOL if you try to prove that YOU didn't sign it. IIRC medical places still use a pen with their device. Amazing what passes for your signature these days.

I had purchased the 2 Gold Buffaloes from PURE. FedEx had signed my name for them while I was in Arizona. My wife found them on the porch. I followed up with Trey at PURE by sending him the details of the irregular delivery. He takes security seriously and will be pursuing this I am sure. The coins are safe back in Michigan but it is WRONG for FedEx to have fraudulent activity occurring.

What, if anything, would you expect Trey to be able to do about it? You should have gotten a tracking # from Trey AND email updates from FEDEX regarding delivery status. When you got the email saying that the package was out for delivery did you call your wife and tell her to expect it?

You should have clicked on the report missing package link and let FEDEX explain their fraudulent activity.

It appears that you misunderstood. It is not missing. The sender, Trey, is entitled to know that FedEx is not living up to their obligations.

When I saw that box I bought filament strapping tape immediately.

Best to use reinforced paper (water-activated) tape. Easily available at Uline.

When I ship coins to PCGS .. I Tape the entire inside and outside of box

I know it wasn't missing, but you could have pretended that it was and got FEDEX's explanation for why they signed your name. Later on you could have just said nevermind, your wife misplaced it. I expect that Trey likely already knows how FEDEX operates. He doesn't have a lot of options as most other services are likely doing the same.

In this case, it was laziness; He dragged the totes into the room, then sat looking at his phone for 30 minutes.
