If people started threads every time somebody thought somebody else paid more than they "should have" for a coin, there wouldn't be much of anything else posted here. Personally, I think the idea that there is one, correct price for any specific coin and that anyone who pays more than that has overpaid, is silly. Of course, as always, YMMV.
I guess for some bidders the money isn't meaningful? Some will pay up to complete a collection. Some just believe the coin is so unique that there is little likelihood that that a similar coin will ever show up again.
Everyone is different. A few years back I was bidding online for a coin I thought would be cool to own. My limit was hit but I kept staring at the coin and decided I would have one more go. The auction was closing quickly so I hit the bid button and another bid came in just as I was hitting the button. I won the coin but paid up two increments to win. I was upset paying the extra $200. If you haven't guessed, I'm obsessive. When the FDX package arrived, I din't bother to open it and handed the package to my wife. I asked her If she could scan the coin into our inventory. It took months before I was able to look at the coin.

It’s a matter of how much was overpaid. Sure, sometimes someone pays what others think is too much, but if it’s not a huge amount as a percentage or if it’s a large percentage but not a lot in absolutes, it can be easier to understand: the buyer was tired of waiting, it had the right look, it’s a really nice example, the buyer just thought its worth more. But here, there’s plenty of precedent for what many would think the coin would sell for, and as both a percentage and in absolutes, the coin blew those numbers out of the water. It’s not a common look, but there are others that exists, so it doesn’t seem like this is the sole example out there. Put all that together and this seems like a coin that sold inexplicably high, to the extent that its price is extremely surprising and unexpected. It’s not just a coin that sold for a bit more than some people thought it would.

For the price of a new car, I'd want a problem free "flashlight" iridescent dollar that looks like something out of the hallucinagenic 60s with more backing than NGC alone as I doubt PCGS would give it the same grade. Maybe someone missed out on a prior rainbow Morgan and did not want to lose their chance with this "opportunity".

Regarding the lack of a CAC sticker, my instinct tells me that those who collect uber toned Morgans do not place the same value on the sticker as some of us do. As such, it may be that no sticker isn't relevant to the bidder's enthusiasm.

That's a lot of money. I can understand the psychology of people bidding things up, someone may think that the other bidders know more than they do, realize it is super special and worthy of higher and higher price levels. But that doesn't make any sense to me on this coin since no doubt it has been to cac or possibly tried for crossovers or a "reconsideration" submission, though NGC used to call that "response regrade" or something like that.

I'm making the statement that the standards of the two services are not the same (for the coins I collect). That is readily apparent looking at the grading and auction results for the two TPGs. Perhaps I've watched and bid in too many auctions this year to be able shut-up and more politely swallow that assumption.
Oddly enough, if you were talking about circulated Canadian coins, then NGC and ANACS are MUCH TOUGHER than PCGS. With Newfoundland halves, PCGS becomes the SCGS, aka Santa Claus Grading Service. NGC and ANACS VF30s miraculously become XF40s at PCGS. Your assumption of grading equity would be even harder to swallow with Newfies.

Exactly. Building my PCGS VF-AU seated quarter set, you had to assume an NGC graded coin would cross 1-2 tiers below. XF40 becomes VF30 etc. That was easy enough to manage but the real issue is that NGC was FAR more lenient on dipped/cleaned coins being straight graded.

There are many AT doctors with greatly varying degrees of skill and results. I believe that the very large percentage of claims along the lines of “All you need to do to make a coin look like that is…” are only that - claims.

I’m sure you do. I’m also sure that they don’t have the capability to put iridescent bag toning of quality enough to fool ngc graders in hand on a Morgan dollar.
If anyone thinks that AT coins don't get graded by the major TPG's on a regular basis, they are kidding themselves. Is it less (maybe much less) than 10-20 years ago? Sure. Is it a very low percentage? Yes. Is it zero percent? No, and no one here will argue that it is because everyone knows that sometimes AT coins get graded.

Again, I haven’t made any assumptions pertaining to the grading of NGC and PCGS. And that includes grading equity.

No, I really think the coin is AT. Regardless, it's splotchy, one sided, horrendously ugly toning, hiding marks that would disqualify an MS67 grade in any objective grading scenario.
If somebody has a capability to AT a coin like that, then it doesn’t matter if it’s real or not. You pay up for good work.
Point being that there’s a 99% certainty that nobody is capable of that work and in the remaining one percent it doesn’t matter because there’s no way that you’d know
I know a few AT doctors. RGDS!

Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????
Retiring at 55, what day is today?
There are many AT doctors with greatly varying degrees of skill and results. I believe that the very large percentage of claims along the lines of “All you need to do to make a coin look like that is…” are only that - claims.

Though we clearly disagree, I appreciate your having replied.

But not this coin.

running like a water color in the rain...."
I think the coin is beautiful.
@gemtone65 - Did you hear from anyone regarding your OP question?

Were you the seller, or were you the buyer of this toner?
Either way, congrats.
