Kyle Tucker. Huge overpay?

craig44craig44 Posts: 12,693 ✭✭✭✭✭

help me make this make sense...

$60MM/year for this guy? check out his black ink. he has led the league in 2 offensive categories in his 6 year career (I will leave out his first 2 seasons when he barely played)

how is that level of offensive production worth even close to 60MM/year.

pretend he is the greatest RFer to ever play baseball. no level of defense in RF could ever make up that difference. what am i not understanding here?

to make even crazier, because the Dodgers are over the luxury tax, the real dollars they will have to pay out per year for Tucker is almost $120MM/year!!!!!!!!!!

not sure what the deferrals will be, but that is insane to me. the Dodgers must be printing money out there

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

Certainly overpaid based on what he has done...but they had a hole and they filled it. They want to win.

wondering if we should start sizing the Dodgers for their 2026 world series rings yet?

I hope so. 1948 it the nail on the head, they want to win. All the teams should want to win. I think they will end up with Tarik also, maybe before the season starts.

As for Tucker -- they way overpaid for him. Mets offered $50 M plus, so they had to top that. I have no problem with it. I do have a problem a little with the Luxury Tax thing. MLB uses competitiveness reasoning to hold down the player signing amounts. Maybe one should exist but it shouldn't be so prohibitive. I think baseball would be better if they had a huge diminimus (sp) (floor spending). Every team should have to spend $300 million plus. If Pittsburgh can't spend it, then move the team or get new owners. The Dodgers are playing to win and about 25 other teams are minor league teams.

Work hard and you will succeed!!

They should be able to sell enough Ohtani merchandise to cover the expense.

Tucker will have a much better year than he had with the Cubs last year. Tucker most likely will hit 5th, possibly 4th. I don't see him going below 5th

serious questions for those who follow baseball more closely than i do, which is probably everyone posting in this thread

when the Dodgers do Dodgers things, are you guys cool with it? if you're not an LA fan, does it quell your enthusiasm prior to the next season? when they continuously flex like this, does it not eliminate 90% of teams before the first pitch is thrown?

Hopefully it is. The game needs it.

I personally do not have a problem with it. they are playing by the rules given them. I have read that with this signing, the Dodgers 2026 payroll will be nearing $600MM if we include the luxury tax!! I have not checked that number myself, but if true, that is stunning.

I think so too. what do you think, a hard cap? a floor salary limit for teams?

to further put Tuckers new salary in perspective, Aaron Judge will be making $40MM in 2026...

It’s the Evil Empire now, babyyyyy! 🤣 I’ve known Dodger baseball since I was old enough to parade around my first home in a diaper and team t-shirt. My entire life. I’ve seen the good, bad and all things between. Our tribe was once upon a time very close to the organization with a family business as one of their main sponsors. As time progressed and things changed, the team lost its soul. The McCourt ownership was horrible. The image of the team suffered. Dodger fans needed the current ownership to happen. The team needed it, the city needed it, rivalries needed it, and if they’re going to spend, they’re really no different than the Yankees, Mets, whoever, but they still need to convince all these guys to want to play here amidst all the expectations and demands. Let ‘em be a target. Every other team in the league is gonna save their best effort to beat them. I hope they do.

Judge just wanted to stay a Yankee is why they got him that cheap. After all just how much money does a player need after he retires as the money flow will continue if he retires a yankee,

As a Twins fan, I don't care. My team is irrelevant.

I have stopped paying much attention to the MLB. This is one of many reasons.

30 million was deferred. They can basically do whatever given they pay Othani only 2 million a year and theyre in win now mode. Freeman and Betts arent getting any younger, neither is Othani and Freemans contract comes off the books in 2 years.

Theyve always preferred shorter contracts with higher AAV but I do have a theory of what theyre doing. I believe theyre going to do what ever right now running up the franchise value and then sell the team in several years.

They have over a billion dollars in deferred money and I think the plan is to let that be someone elses problem

I dont care. Theres so many injuries that happen and anyone can beat anyone in baseball. Everyone should win 60 and lose 60 and then its what you do with the rest. If you cant win 60 youre really tanking or decimated by injury.

I care far more about the drastic rule changes that have fundamentally changed the game

The Cubs were charging $100 for a three year old to attend their Cubs convention...and then they had the balls to attach a convenience fee on top of it!

Had they used all that revenue they have made hand over fist to buy Ohtani a couple years ago, then nobody would be bitching about the Dodgers. Instead, they keep their mega profits.

So no. I have zero problems with the Dodgers. I actually like it as a model for other teams to try and win. It takes smart moves too. Had the Dodgers paid, Rendon, old Pujols, Kris Bryant, and Strasburg instead of Betts, Freeman, and Ohtani, then nobody would be bitching about them in that case too.

I have issues with the Cubs using the team as a real estate investment firm, but I dont think they ever had a shot at Othani. He was really only interested in staying on the west coast

Indeed, they would rather own more buildings than rings.

And some three year olds can afford admission to their gig, if the kiddos are dealing Pokemon cards already, that's a breeze.

And the Cubs will happily take their money and then still try and "win within the margins" as they like to say.

You're right. The sentiment is there though. They could have easily signed Bryce Harper when he was available but they didn't want to use Heyward as a utility player because they already paid him.

For sure. Theres a lot of guys they could have gone after and have the benefit of playing the Pirates so many times and now the Cards are in rebuild mode too.

Theyve been acting like theyre poor for several years now. Unfortunately using the team as a real estate investment term is a growing trend especially when the owners children start running things.
