What are your thoughts on this 1923 S$1? NGC-64 old holder toner

AzurescensAzurescens Posts: 2,893 ✭✭✭✭✭

Looking for opinions on the color, the holder, and the grade. Are carbon spots judged more harshly these days?

Also wondering if this is low or mid range coloration on the desirability scale. I know peace dollar toning is different from many coins.

I know the pics aren't great and I will update when it actually comes. More interested in general impressions when you see a coin like this.

I got it at a good price and really like it regardless of what anyone says so please feel free to be candid.

    reverse- carbon spots detract

obverse - the color is ugly

this is a common coin in bit better than a common grade but it's in an ngc slab and won't sticker.

a good deal would be melt or less, but that's a good deal. i'd say you paid fair price for one

You asked for opinions. In this case I would have opted for a white coin.
Nicely toned Peace dollars are few and far between.
Regardless enjoy the coin. If you like it thats what really matters.

An unattractive common date Peace dollar that is saved by the current high price of silver. Lots of downside risk if the price of silver declines.

I bet it looks better in-hand under decent lighting.

From these photos I would have passed at any price over melt. The tone does not appear to be attractive and again from only these photos the coin appears to grade MS63. Perhaps a different opinion on grade and eye appeal from different photos. But as another said if you like it and are comfortable with the price that is what ultimately matters.

It’s a common date coin that IMHO is not very attractive. It’s an inexpensive coin with limited downside potential and you like it that’s the most important thing.

I don’t like the spots or the toning. It’s an extremely common date. I would sell it and replace it with a better one. I do like the old NGC slab, though. Finally, it looks to be accurately graded. If you like it, that’s all that matters.

If you got it at a good price and like it, that's all that matters. Small carbon spots are common on some dates, do distract but if limited & not on Liberty or the Eagle, do not feel they greatly affect the grade 64 and below. Might swing a level if borderline though. I would not want any noticeable spots on 65 & higher.

That's the gamble. I can see how pics like this could make a coin like this worse. I've bought some real monsters off ebay before and have been pleasantly surprised.

I'm on an old NGC holder peace dollar kick at the moment. Lots of gold toning on this series and some impressive white coins.

There are some really bad MS63s floating around there though, yikes. Like a whole lot.

Would call it a C Coin, low end for grade range.
