2005 D Nickel Possible Mint Error

Can anyone help me I got this from a friend that passed the bag was marked "Send In" it has some finger marks on the front and part of States of America on the back please help

    Looks like something like a strike thru. More input is needed
    (Something like a piece of cloth in between everything)

    What does that mean I'll guess you think it's made with a vice you would need to be really good I took this to a couple dealers around they think it's worth sending in since it's in good condition and the rim is not damaged your thoughts

    Just a damaged coin. The bag should have been marked "spend".

    Ok fair enough but my question is at what point do you know if it's a mint error or a fake so I spend it and someone else sends it in and it's a one of a kind then what just curious what makes it a fake or man made I. Your oppinion

    You need to learn the minting process and then you'll have an idea of how errors can occur in the minting process. It's not enough to simply say the coin looks different so it must be an error.

    As for those people telling you yo send it in, will they cover the fees if they're wrong? 🤔

    I honestly think they would both of them wanted to buy it but I thought No better to be safe

    There is no process at the Mint that would make the coin look like that, only being hammered or squeezed in a vice after having left the Mint.

    I took this to a couple dealers around they think it's worth sending in since it's in good condition and the rim is not damaged your thoughts

    Thought #1: The dealers may be incompetent.

    Thought #2: The dealers may be winding you up. Perhaps you were being a bit difficult?

    Thought #3: You may either be delusional or not posting in good faith.

    a) The obverse rim is significantly and obviously damaged.

    b) The status of the rim has no bearing BY ITSELF on whether something is an error. Some errors affect the rim. Some post-mint damage affects the rim. Some errors have no effect on the rim. Some post-mint damage has no effect on the rim.

    As others have already said, there is no substitute to understanding the minting process.

    This is literally the serration pattern from the vice jaw.

    Ok others have said it die fingers please I'm not trying to sell this or put a fake out there I'm new to this and learning it would need to be a micro vice the line are close again I'm learning thanks for your input

    To get started on understanding errors, you must first understand the minting process.

Note that many errors seem less common with the implementation of the vertical die chamber and other process enhancements some years ago, just a personal observation that I have no source to back up before anyone asks.
