It looks like a few people got cold feet and canceled a few orders as some are back up.

These were $1545 when they first came out in February which is why I bought one back then.
On Tuesday I placed an order for some to speculate with and there is no way to cancel them yet as they are in Processing state. Even if you called the mint on Dec 24 they were closed and I suspect they are also closed on Dec 26 per Trump's EO so no orders have been cancelled unless by automatic means (ie payment failure).
Platinum futures jumped to over $2400 tonight to start the last day of trading for the week. These are officially below spot once again and there are plenty of 2018s, 2023s, and 2024s to buy. Judging by the way they have yet to sell out these are worth nothing more than melt while the 2025s may be very low mintage. I expect this run in platinum to take us to the $3000 area.

Given that it was several hundred that went in a short period of time last night, and that your experience indicates that retail cannot cancel an order in process, it kind of has to be dealer(s) that bought a lot that was able to cancel some or all of an order that accounted for the few that were returned to inventory today. Particularly in light of the fact that we know for sure no one at the Mint manually did so today.

They are now ~$100 under futures price.
I think it's safe to say that we don't truly understand how some inventory gets made available again and there are several reasons for cancellations some of which may be automated. I'm actually collecting some info on this as we speak. When I first placed an order for some of these 2025 plats, I chose Paypal as the payment method and ensured that my preferred payment method (a credit card) was set. After I made the purchase I see that Paypal is instead going to attempt to take the funds from my bank account which does not have sufficient funds instead of using that CC which really upsets me but that's not the point here. That transaction still shows as Processing. Since I expect that transaction to fail I placed a second order directly using the CC I want to use and I expect that one to go through. It is also still in Processing status. I can't explain the refresh in inventory but perhaps when someone attempts a purchase that fails instantly the mint still take it out of inventory until the system refreshes and puts it back but that's just a guess. I don't know. What I do know is that there was and has been no way for me to cancel the first transaction so presumably no one else could cancel either.

I am liking this thread. The 2025 PlatProof is a fun surprise from the final week of the year.
And as a bonus, the 2025 is Cleary the better looking example of this particular series.
Spot pricing is unpredictable and not for the weak of heart and so I appreciate the discussion around the strong hands.
The Platinum and Palladium eagles from the Mint are very well done. I enjoy collecting both.

I'm seeing the 2018, 2023 and 2025 are now out of stock again. There are 2947 of the 2024 left. Still priced at $2345.

Agreed. If platinum doesn't pull back, and the Mint doesn't reprice today, these are likely to be scooped up over the weekend, if not before then. The Mint is probably fine letting these go at $2345, given that they are already made, they don't move at $500 over spot, and they were made at much lower prices.

At the current rate, I expect these to sell out before 1pm assuming the platinum spot price doesn't crash in the meantime. Currently, there are only 459 coins left of the 2024 version. Every time I refresh more coins are gone. Hilarious because when I picked up my 2025 back when it launched after the initial spike maybe 10 sold a day, then several days without a single sale. Now this. Ha.

There are ETF’s PLTM and PPLT if you want to play the metal market. Not as fun as buying coins, but then again I do not have to put up $5000 cash for a couple ounces, and I can sell tomorrow if I get cold feet…

Of course, SLV and GLD for silver and gold.

    But remember

Past performance does not guarantee future results☹️

I bought the 2024 coin a couple of days ago before Christmas. Chose it over the 2018 coin due to lower mintage. Only those two choices were available. I was on the fence last night about buying a second but did not check the Mint website. I browsed earlier today to see all the Pt coins sold out as others indicated.

Pt spot is at $2461 ask with the market closed. 50-50 probability so far that Pt stays up in late 2026.

    This thread is timely.

    Thanks !!

I agree. Been a long time since I bought an ounce of Mint platinum. ☺️

The mint has to be happy to get rid of all the old platinum products. I doubt they will strike any more going forward. I assume the only platinum APE's that will be available now will be those sold to bad credit cards.

FWIW on my botched order above, I expected it to get rejected but it went through and I'll be receiving both orders. It turns out that my Paypal balance can (and will) go negative but the order still gets filled. Oh well, that works for me this time and I can always return the coins for a few days anyway.

Something similar happened to me with Costco online a month ago or so.
I ordered a gold bar. Turns out the card did not have enough credit line by a bit.
So I got an order rejected email soon after with little explanation but implied the order will cancel..
I reviewed the card and paid the balance. Then placed a new order with the same card within 30 minutes of the rejected order.
That one went through no problem.

Turns out that Costco continues to attempt to fulfill a rejected order 'automatically' even though this is not disclosed.

Mind you that Costco forbids more than one online order of bullion per day. This was two orders in the same day.
So they violated their own rules!!

A few days later, I get an email that another order was confirmed (but not shipped yet) !!
Huh? Costco customer service was spotty. On the phone and online.
Long story short ,they would not cancel that first order and I had to pay for it. I even made a claim on the Costco card.

But, I kept that gold order by default.
They caused me to lose out on buying a lower price bar in the interim period as I had planned. (buy dips).

Anyway, with this Pt coin from the US Mint the other day, it cost me $40 face value of 90% quarters !
Quarters sold so I am in the black.

Platinum trending down tonight. Wonder what, if any adjustment the Mint will make tomorrow on Proof Plat pricing?

  • They are all sold out already so any price adjustment is moot, unless of course the spot price drop causes some order cancellations

So much for anyone who thought they were buying these 10% back of spot. The only question now is how many of them will be coming back to the Mint in the next few weeks?

Likely far more than none, where they will then just sit again at the new higher prices, with those chasing easy money chastened and reluctant to see how many returns they get before the Mint cuts off their return privileges. Unless, of course, platinum pops back up by $500 in the next few days.

Doesn't really matter, since they are sold out. All is now right again in the world, given that they are now priced $500 above spot.

Moreover, returns that come back at $2345 will surely sit unsold at $2645. Unless and until we have another violent spike resulting in a $500+ increase in spot before the Mint has a chance to reprice. We are unlikely to ever see that again.

That said, given how many sold late last week, I am pretty sure anyone who actually wants to pick up any of these will have an opportunity in the next few weeks.

The Cumulative Sales Figure for week ending 12/29/2025 is 6,456. It’s higher than I hoped for. Keeping the 2025 platinum one ounce proof coin won’t be because it is a low mintage coin.

Only time will tell whether platinum is king.

It's a low mintage coin. Also a low demand one.

No matter how you slice it, anything from the US Mint below 10K is objectively "low mintage." Doesn't mean people want them.

People jumped on these last week because they were a rare opportunity to buy precious metal proof coins from the Mint below spot. A violent, historic move down yesterday eliminated that opportunity.

Whether or not people keep what they bought last week is anyone's guess. Who really cares, given that no one was paying attention to these, for years, before last week?

  • HeubschgoldHeubschgold Posts: 190 ✭✭✭

For what it is worth, current dealer price while spot is around $2134.00 ask.

American 1 Oz Platinum Eagle BU (Random Year) $2,392.20 check/wire
    $2,487.89 credit card/paypal

So old Mint price still not bad for those that were interested in a Platinum Eagle.

The new price is a brick wall.

Mine cost me $40 of 90% Ag coin.

Yeah. People are only interested in these if they think they are stealing them. Shouldn't be shocking, given how long they all sat, with such modest mintages, until last week. Also considering even the normal premium is half that of the gold coins.

People just don't care about platinum. Should be obvious, given where platinum is trading vs. gold. Once upon a time it traded at a premium, because it is significantly more rare than gold.

  • NumismetalNumismetal Posts: 74 ✭✭✭

I think people would pay more attention to platinum if the mint paid more attention and made a better effort at the designs. The good design of the 2025 feels almost accidental and it's why I picked it up when it was first released. May go lower again who knows.

Only if it can move far enough fast enough to overcome the mint's premium pricing... would need to move up about $300 I think for them to sell out although there aren't many left. The mint will reprice at least $100-150 higher this week I expect.

Really, given that they have been sitting for ~2+ years? They could have shipped and been returned. They could have been canceled when the spot price dropped before they shipped. Or, now hear me out, they could be returns from over a year ago.

All we know for sure is that whatever is now ATS is not hot off the press, freshly minted product. No miracle of modern government logistics necessary.

You buy now because you like platinum at its near all time high, and like the coin at its modest premium to spot, given how volatile spot currently is. Not because you are looking for virgin FDOI Advance Release PR70 DCAMs. Because all of these coins have been gathering dust for well over a year. Maybe a return, maybe not.

They never sold through to begin with. They made too many. And charged too much. That's why the mint makes less and less each year because they are trying to "right size" production.

No, it was a temporary pricing anomaly I took advantage of. The mint pricing is now keeping up with the market (the market is moving slower) and they are maintaining a healthy premium now making proof APEs a bad choice for platinum stackers.

I am doing well with my flip so far as I bought 2025s which are now sold out and I have been able to sell them for about the same premium the mint was charging. If you watched weekly mint sales the mint sells a handful of these every week to people who apparently feel the specific need a 2025 for their collection. Now they go to ebay where so far I am the only one selling them so naturally I'm picking up those sales. I doubt the same would be possible with the other dates because they are just too abundant.
