Okay great cause I wasn’t sure if this was tooled by someone.
I recently purchased some unopened mint set boxes on EBay and the seller sent me a $10 shipping refund in the form of several gemmy half dollars and dollar coins.

Which was kind of concerning cause then I started thinking are these boxes really unopened?
This one is pretty banged up maybe he did it knowingly?
I don't follow you
Which part?
When I buy unopened mint bags and boxes on eBay I try to buy from non-coin collectors, and I come to that assessment based on the other items they have for sale. I realize that that is no guarantee but at least one level of assurance and I also realize if they had all coins for sale that it could’ve just been somebody selling off an entire collection that they had stumbled upon. So it’s always kind of a crapshoot.
When he refunded me with coins that were obviously cut from mint sets I realized that I was buying from a pro.
But then again, he could’ve just been really stupid but I doubt it.
I’m not claiming that these bags were opened, checked and resealed. And I wonder if when people bought these in bulk and maybe they just opened a few and realized they were bad condition they just didn’t open the others.
The end result were crappy coins but that’s life. However, my winning ratio on eBay is very low as compared to buying in person at random bullion dealers who honestly don’t have the time to look at the quality of the sets.
bagged coins are baggy. the quality is much lower than rolls. i don't touch mint bagged coins. think of all that movement when shipped
i'd also go with big dealers who might not search buys versus ebay
Well, damn, I’ve been doing it all backwards. Thanks for the advice always appreciated.
I'm not sure a non-collector would know the difference between opened and unopened. Those amateurs are also the same people who post parking lot coins for $1000.

Good point @jmlanzaf so now I’m looking for opened errrrr neither just some random box of coins possibly found in a parking lot.
One of my favorites is when they try to hide the tarnish or and when they realize you saw it and try to play it off like it’s
No big deal I’ll just give you a discount.
I’m like yeah, those are tarnished meanwhile the hamster wheel in my head is spinning so fast I’m trying to hide the smoke. 💨
Good buys come from people stuck with someone else’s stuff.
