My (in)Complete Wayte Raymond Two Volume Set of Large Cents... Warning! Lots of pictures!
Inspired by a recent post, here is my two-volume Wayte Raymond set of Large Cents. I originally set out to build a VF/XF Middle Date (Coronet Head) set, but that plan quickly evolved into selecting coins that simply looked right for the grade (hence the AG 1823).
Along the way, I won a few higher-grade coins at auction, and some of those have been sent to our hosts. After completing the Coronet Head date run, I briefly flirted with Red Book varieties—very briefly. Some of those varieties are exceptionally tough, and I had trouble justifying spending serious money on AG–VG coins with problems simply to fill holes.
At that point, I decided to revisit a Large Cent date set, a project I had abandoned more than 20 years ago. I’m now back to “the last three”: the usual suspects—1793, 1799, and 1804—but this time with a much better eye for copper. Many of the Coronet Head and Braided Hair cents would likely holder, and a few were previously cracked out of TPG holders before I acquired them from established EAC dealers.
My line in the sand for pre-1816 coins was a readable date with minimal corrosion, cleaning, or damage. I may add a few more coins as opportunities arise, but they’re getting fewer and farther between—especially with some tough varieties still on the want list (1795 LE, 1797 Stemless, for example).
Anyway, here’s the set…
Volume I 1793 - 1823

Volume II 1823 - 1857

And some of the ones in TPG holders... still imaging these...

Very nice set, Leo, thanks for taking the time to post this!
That is a terrific looking set! If you ever upgrade the 1795 and 1796 and want to unload the clipped coins, let me know.

Thanks, Greg... and thanks again for the direction, inspiration, and some of the coins in this set! There's definitely room for upgrades down the line... Best, Leo

I was actually looking at clipped 1794's at one point...

Delightful set! A labor of love!
@lkenefic Great looking set! I LOVE the 1819/8! I also love the progression of condition from the early dates to the end of the series. I can only imagine how much you have tied up in this set.
A very traditional collection and grade set for this series that any collector can appreciate. Just getting a decent 1811 can be very tough. I can appreciate your efforts.

Curious @lkenefic , will you break out the coins in the holders to fill the holes in the album?
Nice set, classic numismatic pursuit.
Other passions include golf, Moto Guzzi motorcycles, and Euro motorcycles in general.

There is something soooo appealing about circulated raw type coins, it takes me back to the wonder I had as a very young collector who was in awe of them
Commems and Early Type
I've gone exactly in the opposite direction. Early on, I did crack a few VF coins for the album but as I won a few auctions for higher grade coins, it just made sense to get them certified... like the 1819/8 and a few others. I reached a point where if I bought the coin in a holder, I just left it in the holder... I've got an 1840 SD in a CAC holder and I'll likely just keep it there. The "certified" plastic proxy coin serves the purpose for letting me know which coins I have slabbed... but I also had a few extras... like the 1839 Booby Head that I just put the lower grade coin into that slot. When I got my 1839/6, it was already PCGS and CACd... I'm not going to mess with that...

You have put together a beautiful Large Cent collection. It is a real joy to look at. I imagined it has taken a long time to put together.
Your 1823 N-1 and 1839/6 are specially nice.
Thanks! As it sits now... it's taken me around 5 years to get to this point with this collection. The 1823 was a bit of a compromise... I had finished second in several auctions for F15 - VF20 certified coins and I thought I had bid strong on a couple of them... only to get sniped in the final seconds. This AG version came available for Best Offer, and the rest as they say, is history... I don't think I have more than about $100 into it.
The 1839/6 was purchased from a known EAC dealers website... I saw it and grabbed it! Most of these were going for over $1k at the time I bought it... this one was a little less...

...added a couple more and re-imaged the album coins. Remaining "holes" will most likely be certified coins...

Wonderful collection. Love the album!
My 1866 Philly Mint Set
Thanks! I had to swap lenses and recharge the battery so I can image more of the coins in slabs... I should have those edited and posted tonight...

That Booby Head is absolutely killer!
Thanks! Pierre Fricke had it on his For Sale list as XF45 Choice surfaces and excellent color. I probably have more into it that I should, but I do like looking at this coin!

11.5$ Southern Dollars, The little “Big Easy” set
Thanks for the kind words... I've been trying to image the last few coins in TPG holders and doing a little photo editing too. Imaging through plastic is definitely "a task"... it's the best I could do for the 1803, 1840 SD, 1844, and 1847... LMK what you think. The scuffs are on the plastic... which is super unfortunate for the CAC'd 1840 SD...
