My Liberty $5 gold registry set has only 5 coins, but no other existing set has these 2 dates!

My Liberty $5 gold registry set only has 5 coins (is rated 17th), but no other existing set has these 2 dates!

Some possible reasons:

  • There are only 3 CAC 1869's and 6 CAC 1872's.
  • The 1869 has a highest grade of AU-58 in PCGS.
  • The particularly well heeled collectors haven't found their perfect coin- Hanson included!
  • These coins are rare with 50-55 known in all grades, per PCGS. However these are more available compared to the rarity of an 1854-S,1875 or even the 1864-s or 1865.
  • The rare Philly dates are not hot.
  • It's a shame that PCGS does not give more relative credit for rare date coins. An MS-63 common date likely racks up more points than either of these coins.

Nice coins! The reconstruction era 1866-1878 is probably my favorite era of coinage. Super rarities in almost every series, mostly because of Carson City, but people overlook how rare SF and Philly coins are, like the 1873 CL3 quarter etc.

The $5 Liberty is a great set to display all mint marks (other than WP).

This is my favorite era as well! I sold a lot of the Seated Dimes to get the gold. I still have the 1871-1874-cc dimes. Not in high grades!

You have a LONG journey ahead to complete that set! I can relate with the seated half dollar quest.

Here are my sets. I don't do them for the competition aspect - just more to help me track my collection and personal journey. Note the set where I'm ranked at 5. That's because there are only 5 participating! :D

    Hi Catbert,

Yes! I could not afford to complete the $5 set, even at melt! You have some very beautiful Liberty Seated Half Dollars. There are too many to mention, but the 1839 WD and 1859 are gorgeous. The 1862 is the prettiest XF coin I believe I have seen!
    Good job!

Lovely $2/1/2 Indian CAC set as well!

Very nice. I am more of a Classic Head $5 guy or a $5 Type set. Only have these two $5 Liberty's.

    Very nice examples!

I like the Liberty $5 but only really enjoy the No Motto variety. I put together a short set of all five mintmarks of the NM variety.

Love the mm set! Very original coins! I need a 'C' and a 'D' myself.

I put together a near complete date set but it’s no longer on the registry. I agree that those two dates are difficult.

I still have my 1869 - one of the AU58’s.

Wow!!! Top pop at PCGS!!!!! Great color and luster too! Beautiful!

Liberty $5's are a formidble set. I like the 1869 and 1872. Your set includes a 1842...such an under appreciated Philadelphia date for both $2.50 and $5. Nicely done.

Thank you OnlyGoldIsMoney! For the 1842, I went for the Large Letters, which is scarcer. That's my theme. Collect the under appreciated coins. If I can just get 10 coins like this, I'll be thrilled.

EarlyAurum's 42-D was one of the two or three nicest coins in the extensive half eagle set sold in the 2025 FUN auction. Col Green - Farouk-Pittman - Early Aurum.
My lot viewing notes were: monster, will outperform grade. Loved that coin.

I see that this is the PCGS AU-58 plate coin and the much rarer large date! It's prettier than this MS-61, per the picture, which may be the only PCGS MS coin- https://auctions.stacksbowers.com/lots/view/3-2V14M/1842-d-liberty-half-eagle-large-date-ms-61-pcgs

Thanks for the nice comments. It is a very nice looking coin - I think nicer than the MS-61 too. I had to stretch to get it.
