Cladding Question?
Can a coin be clad on only one side? Should the finish on the front be the same as that on the back. 2008 vintage. I just weighed it. 4.81 g. also iy appears to have a seam or partial seam around the perimeter. All I know about coins is what I'm learning here so I appreciate your input.
Thank you ![]()

Photos would allow the chance to provide a definitive answer as to what you have.
I have failed at all attempts to take a photo and after a closer look, it seems to have the same issues on both front and back. There is some sort of residue on the face of both obverse and reverse, right around the edge. I imagine I will need to take it to an expert to it can be examined. Curious!
Sorry that we can’t help but without a photo, it is
almost impossible to say what you have.
Can't be sure of the date without trying to remove some of the "Stuff". Is there somewhere you could suggest to send it for examination?
You have a damaged coin. Note the dent on the rim.
Whatever is on that nickel would have occurred after it left the mint.
No way of telling what it is from the poor photos supplied.
It is only worth 5 cents so don’t spend any time or effort on it.
Nickels aren't clad, they are a solid copper nickel alloy. I agree with Greenstang, just a gunked up damaged nickel.
Thank you all.
I've learned something new.
