I purchased this Lincoln “death” medal back in the summer at the Northern VA
Community College show. I have several pieces of Lincoln related exonumia in my collection and was immediately drawn to the toning on this piece. Not sure what on earth is going on with Honest Abe’s dome on this one……I think it’s supposed to be some kind of morph with Lincoln’s head and George Washington’s wig…? Honest Abe with a mohawk? Perhaps other collectors here can shed some insight.
I thought it was a cool piece worth adding to my collection, and knew I’d never be able to photograph it properly. I think the TV came out pretty good on this one. The color absolutely pops in hand.
Purchased as an NGC 64. Now PCGS MS 63. Pop 1/0.

Very nice.
Love the mohawk. Also interesting that the reverse letters must have been punched individualy... they are crooked.

Oh. Wow! Very gorgeous!! Historic!!!
It looks like a die hubbed with a period Washington medal portrait was modified to look "Lincolny." The reverse legend aims to link them.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys. This was a classic example of “you never know what you’re going to find at a coin show” purchase. I do love Lincoln stuff, but there can be a fine line with stuff like this between desirable and mass produced crap. Everyone knew to jump on the Lincoln Death Commemoration train pretty much right after it happened, so there is a lot to sort through with material like this.
The eye appeal stemming from what I believed was naturally occurring color made it an easy purchase on my end…….but I found the weird depiction of Lincoln and specifically the “Mohawk” to be interesting. While I don’t know for sure, I do think it’s meant to be a mash up of Lincoln’s portrait with Washington’s wig (if anyone knows otherwise I’d love to be educated. @Meltdown pointed out the suspected hand punched letters, which I had also considered…..really appreciate the second set of eyes and the opinion. Just another quirk to the piece that helps separate this particular piece from the thousands /millions of Lincoln Death Tokens one can purchase with little to no difficulty, at least for me anyway.
