Sad, but true, discussion over the dinner table tonight...

BochimanBochiman Posts: 25,622 ✭✭✭✭✭

Wife: Ok, I'm going to the credit union in a few days and will turn in coins. So, put all you want turned in on the table by then.
Me: I already put some...there's also the big bottle my mom had for pennies.
Wife: Too big and heavy for this trip.
Son: Just keep the pennies. They aren't making them anymore. They'll be worth something!
Me: Dude! These are all non-wheaties anyway, and no big money varieties. I already looked. And, they were minted in the BILLIONS!
Son: Well, they may be worth something for "my" (his) grandchildren in the future. (Kid just graduated college and not even married)

Now for the really sad part....
Me: Ummmm....you do know I have some cents that are worth $xxxx (1877 IHC, 1908-S, 1909-SVDB etc), and you haven't even cared about them when I wanted to discuss their future (ie...keep or sell).
Son: Ummmmmmm

Sorry. just realized that is an inside family joke. Every time the kids would complain they were hungry that is what my wife would say. James

I only see a positive out of this in that your son is appreciative of lower cost coins with a possible collector interest. If he only cared about an svdb in 65 red as a starting point, I’d think he would have a short term to no interest at all in coins as a hobby or interest.

    Why am I not surprised?

There really seems to be resistance to dig beneath the surface to seek out and appreciate what exists and what is possible.

And this is not just a coin collecting issue... it really extends to so many different subjects and collectibles.

I will end this prematurely, so the thread is not considered hijacked.

Having dinner at a dinner table with family is rare indeed these days!

No getting around it, your son has the collector gene.

This always happens, when they find out money is involved, and then it’s a rush to sell.

It is. And since he came back for awhile, after graduating college, we are making the most of it. He'll be moving, for his job, early 2026, so wife is getting all the time in while she can.

And...yes...if they aren't wheaties, or DDOs, they are getting "recycled" at the credit union.

All good...it is kind of an inside family joke, as he is going through the path I did. Collect as a kid. Time away during high school/college (for me, was high school/army/college), then maybe revisit after. It's just not high on his list of interests right now, at this age. I've given him the option of keeping some (he is keeping what OnlyRoosies sent him when he was young and had some medical issues...those really cheered him up then and have a place for him (the albums mainly, as the graded coins are nice but he may sell those)) and selling some and keeping the money. He just has wanted to put effort into selling.

So, hearing him say that about the common cents....I shook my head and laughed.
