1944 "Henning" Nickel
I've had this for many years marked simply as counterfeit. Just pulled it out to look more closely and I believe it is a "Henning" Nickel. Has the telltale die break above Monticello.

The most obvious "tell" for that reverse die is the "looped R" (actually damage on the coin that was used to make the die).
These have become very popular. That forgery you have is probably worth a couple to a few hundred dollars on ebay.
Nice
.
I think the "looped R" defect is due to a bubble during the casting process when making the die.
.
Were they cast? For some reason i thought thet were done by an impact process, but I might be thinking of the Colombian Sacs.
.
I think the Henning dies were cast steel. Some counterfeit dies are made via an impact process. Others are made using a spark erosion method.
Here is a Jefferson 5-cent piece that was cast in solid copper (at 5.50 grams it is 10% too heavy compared to a genuine coin). Note the similar defects on the "D" of UNITED and near the second "S" in STATES:
PS:
I wonder if the piece above is a Henning prototype. He was out of jail by 1964 and it shows a looped letter and a raised dot after MONTICELLO (one of his earlier counterfeits has a similar dot above the building to the left.
.
Yes, it is a Henning Nickel. The die crack between the U & S all the way down to the top of the dome. Also, The Dot between the D & W on the Obverse is an indicator. The looped R and the Missing mint mark guarantees it is a real Henning Nickel too. Send it to ICG and get it certified as a Henning. I have 4 that are all certified and it definitely increases the value. Congratulations

You mean ICG.
Oh, the irony. Have the forgery authenticated as a genuine forgery to increase it's value. 😆
I've have several Hennings I need to get slabbed for posterity. I used to buy them 20 or 25 years ago whenever I could get them for under $20 or so. The cheapest one was $1, and that one was AU+ with original "luster", and included a genuine silver war nickel.
Doesn't PCGS authenticate Machin's Mills cents which are counterfeits?

By sendinh it to ICG YOU INCREASE THE VALUE SIGIFICANTLY. in thIs case there is no doubt thait is a Henning. But if you don't LIKE certified coins, so be it.

Thanks, Mike. I have made the correction to ICG. Getting old and typing don't always go together.

The sad thing is, sooner or later someone might start counterfeiting Henning nickels since they have become somewhat valuable. That reason alone makes slabbing them now a good idea.
Yeah and it’s seen quite a lot of circulation. Nice cojn. Keep in mind Henning done 1939, 1946, 1953 and 1944 without the loop R. Weights are usually 5,3 grams but not always. There may also be small numbers of different dates that are so good they have escaped attention. Unlike D Carr Henning kept no records. From South Jersey, it’s likely most entered circulation there. Large quantities were recovered soon after Hennings arrest dumped in the Cooper river, and subsequent river searches have found more. It’s estimated he dumped 14,000” nickels”. It is said the US Mint used Hennings large amount of unstruck planchets…..true in a sense but actually they were melted and rerefined along with other metal destined to become US Nickels.. Hennings alloy was a bit more complicated than the standard alloy.
ICG does. https://www.icgcoin.com/
