The rounding of change has begun at retailers.

291fifth291fifth Posts: 24,806 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just got back from making a purchase at my local Kroger grocery store. There were signs on the automated checkout machines asking buyers to use exact change at the machines due to the discontinuance of cent production. I was paying in cash and didn't have any change so paid with a five and two ones. The machine rounded the purchase in my favor by three cents. I'm rich! :)

All glory is fleeting.

I'm hearing some companies are doing that here and are even low change count on cashiers drawers (said by cashiers i know). I believe it

If this is happening, it's not due to scarcity of pennies, but potentially increased coinage costs from carriers or retailers using an excuse to avoid the lower denomination.

So, over 100 billion coins just in the last 15 years... ostensibly "in circulation"... and we're STILL short on cents for change?? How many of us are keeping 55 gallon steel containers full of cents???

That's only about 300 pennies per person. I probably have that many around here in a jar.

In a sense, it’s been happening for decades with the little “leave a penny, take a penny” cups.
Many local B&M stores in my area just round and have done so for a long time (Bay Area, Calif.).

People been throwing pennies on the ground for years. You go to a corner store they have the little cup "leave a penny or take a penny" Nobody gives a ratsass about a penny. They make a mess outta everything. Even the Texas Comptroller doesn't want them. When you file and pay sales tax they only want the whole dollars they ain't got no time to be counting pennies.

Yeah, the mint only produced 1.3 Billion cents for circulation this year. That doesn't take into consideration the number of cents still circulating about from the last 65 years of production. We really can't find any for the registers?

The coins are gone. Zincs virtually evaporate in air and the coppers have been sucked up in vacuum cleaners for at least 42 years. The few that survive are corroding in landfills.

Fear not it's easy to find all the memorials in the billions actually still "circulating". They will be common for centuries because a penny isn't worth hauling to the bank. But if you want a Gem 1968 or a 1984 with flat attractive surfaces you better look now because few were made and almost all are long gone.

AI says; _ “The coins aren’t gone—they’ve drifted. And the ones that remain are either buried in entropy or gleaming in the hands of those who still listen.”_

So where did all of these Shield cents disappear to? Sounds more like the stores don't want to bother with cents anymore rather than an actual cent shortage........

There have been over 100 Billion business strike Shield cents minted since 2010.

If I were a vendor, I would round everything down. I rather risk 3-4 cents than lose 3% if they decide to use a credit card instead.

Lol. Important distinction that, unfortunately, is a constant struggle with my students. It's become a pet peeve. I must write "round don't truncate" 50 to 100 times per year. Please play a tiny violin in sympathy.

Except I doubt very many people make the decision to use the card based on that same 3 cents that they often throw on the ground.

If I'm the buyer, I always use the card to get my points or cashback rather than throw away the 2% to get 3 or 4 cents.

Agree, I only use cash for my morning coffee refill ($1.59) and when transacting with The Amish. Many of them are now accepting credit cards. Won't be too much longer and cash will be a thing of the past. I've pocketed 1/2ozt of the Au so far this year just from the free cc points. RGDS!

If the Amish were smart, they'd create their own currency - Amish Bucks - and force you to exchange before transacting with them.
