A little interlude, now that I'm into the MVP portion of the 1975 set.

Besides the regular sized cards, I also acquired a number of graded minis, and started a registry set for the minis before eventually abandoning that idea. They're mostly commons and semi stars, but I do have a Brett, Reggie, and an Aaron, which I'll share when I get to their spot in the regular set. Besides those 3 HOFers, the other cards of note are these nice MVPs. I'll just post them all together here.

OK, I know everyone's getting excited with anticipation for the big rookies in the #220s.

I just want to take a quick second before I get to showing my best Robin Yount cards and mention the "puddle".

For those of you that don't know, there was a thread on here maybe 7 or 8 years ago. It was one of the standard "Look at this card! No way it should have gotten a 10! The only reason it got that grade was because of name of the submitter". People were showing a lot of examples of a lot of different cards. I don't recall if it was a PSA 9 or a 10, but someone shared a Robin Yount rookie, and the usual criticism began. Usual stuff. Corners? Centering? Tilt? Registration?

Now, I'd been hoarding 1975s for several years by that time, and had handled a crapload of Yount cards, and looked at even more online. Once you see the puddle, you can't unsee it, so you notice it every time when a card has it. Some have it and some don't, and all I said was, "This one has the puddle right smack dab in the middle, so if anything, it should get a PD." because to me, it looks like a big water puddle in the grass.

I was surprised that no one knew what I meant. I guess people that had a Yount with this particular defect thought it was just a normal part of the photo, perhaps a towel on the grass, or some powder blue Brewers workout gear, etc.

The defect is only on the regular sized card, never the mini. It is a big blue splotch right between Yount's legs. It looks like this, a "puddle".

    .
I'm not implying that I'm the only one that knew about it anywhere in the world, but it sure seemed like I was the only one in that thread that was aware that this is a PD, and not something found on every Yount. That thread had a wealth of information in it. We had members with printing experience describing exactly what would have caused it, etc. Anyway, as some threads do, it went off the rails and got closed and deleted. I believe a second thread was started specifically about the Yount, and while you may be able to find it in the archives, it was not nearly as informative.

I don't know how common of a print defect it is, but it is not rare. I think I've thrown a lot of different guesses out there, but I really don't know. Maybe 20% have the blue on it, maybe just 10%, maybe 30%? You can likely go on eBay right now and find multiple graded and raw with the defect.

I feel it is common enough and noticeable enough that if you're not going to downgrade it as a PD, then it should be considered a variation. I mean, if the 1982 Topps Tom Seaver All-Star card can have 2 variations of "tied" or "t ed" printed on the back, both which are easily found, then Yount should have a "puddle" and "no puddle".

Anyway, this info was for the casual 1975 collector or Yount fan that didn't know this " puddle variation" existed.

Now, let me snap some pics of Robin...

Here is my 7.5 (with a puddle) and my SGC 7

Here is the Yount from my #2 set, with a puddle.

I had to dig all the way down into my #10 set to find another with the puddle.

I would guess 20% is a good number for the print defects. I believe when that original thread was going, I had something like 36 Younts in hand, and 7 or 8 had the puddle.
