What a coincidence the story is exposed at the start of the NBA season. For maximum media coverage when many eyes are on the games.

The technology involved in those rigged poker games is impressive. Makes you wonder about those card shuffling machines used.

the unveiling of this immediately after the season commenced is too good

might as well have come out and said, "this is what you get for running a dirty sport"

If it's a few player's and coaches it will be one thing but if online betting sites are involved in any way the repercussions will be out of this world

I bet they ripped off the wrong guy at one of those rigged poker games.

Would have been impactful if the FBI arrested Billups right before tipoff against the T-Wolves last night...

One would have to think these would be open & shut cases for them to wait this long before the sting. Perhaps some ratted out the others - didn't read all the details.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

They wait awhile before moving in to help themselves build a stronger case and see if they can reel in more corrupt people involved

Once certain people getting the threat of lengthy jail time and fines the talking will start

Chauncey Billups allegedly told gamblers that the Blazers were tanking and the top 4 scorers weren't going to play in a game two years ago. six figures were dropped and Portland lost by 28 points that night.

imagine me saying the following in my best possible Bill Lumbergh voice

if someone could please let me know the next time a game is totally rigged, that would be great

if you watched Houston-OKC on opening night, you saw this. Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, Helen Keller, and Mr. Magoo saw it. the only 3 people who didn't see it.......amazingly.......incredibly........improbably.......unfathomably.......were Moe, Larry and Curly in pinstripes.

let me set the stage. it was OT. game tied. OKC missed a shot to win the game. Kevin Durant rebounds the ball with a couple of seconds left. he tries to call timeout. only one problem: Houston had none left. everyone reacted to it, including his own teammate who ran to him and was basically saying, "yo, don't do that!"

Durant should have been teed up and OKC would have shot a free throw and retained possession of the ball. in other words, the game in all likelihood would have been over due to that gaffe. but the refs came together and decided to........amazingly.......incredibly.......improbably........unfathomably........let it slide.

imagine if the Rockets had gone on to win that game?

Shades of Chris Webber while at Michigan during the 1993 NCAA title game against North Carolina :)

Except the referee called a technical on Webber since Michigan did not have any time outs remaining (the ref in that game was not blind; unlike all three refs two nights ago).

That Durant fiasco and the million other questionable incidents revolving referees further makes my stance that we should just take them completely out of the game, screw these guys and paying them for their stupidity and nonsense

If they can put a robot on Mars they can figure out some program to video the game and pick up on penalties and make calls better than the human element.

I hope they figure it out and get rid of every referee and ump out there.

    I hate them all

Saw a news report today on the computer screen that S.A.S. on First Take claimed that the investigation leading to today's arrests was fueled by the current president and his thirst for revenge.

My understanding is that the investigation has been ongoing for about 4 years.

My thoughts about ALL media reports is:

Those things basically ruined blackjack and turned it completely into a game of luck

Im not really surprised though that this extends past off the court stuff given how easy it is for one player or one ref in basketball to have a massive impact on the game. I never have and never will bet on a basketball game given that fact

My best guess is for Rozier's situation the NBA probably found out after the fact of the potential scandal around his under bets and probably got tipped off by the FBI to stand down and let them finish their investigation especially since Mafia involvement was part of it

I would bet they knew given the fact that most of these top security guys for the big 4 leagues are former feds who still have a lot of contacts and may have even been the ones to tip it off. It looks a lot better for the leagues if the feds step in than to self penalize

Yep, retired LE always take big money jobs like that

Completely makes sense, my point was that the NBA might very well been aware of Rozier cheating and were told by the Feds to let them finish their investigation and keep quiet since it involved so many people and criminal organizations

Absolutely. This has certainly been going on for some time and didnt just come to charges over night. I think the NBA might be in a little bit of a panic mode right now with the former LEOs theyve hired and the current ones with how bad the situation is for them right now

Supposedly referee Scott Foster had his home raided this morning by the FBI. Foster was the recipient of 100+ phone calls from corrupt referee Tim Donaghy when Donaghy was still officiating.

i heard on the radio this AM that during ESPN's reporting of this "situation" that they removed the ESPN BET advertisement that runs at the bottom of the screen.

i wonder why they did that???? Weird.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

  • craig44craig44 Posts: 11,962 ✭✭✭✭✭

doesnt this also make you wonder about the 2 fantom PI penalties called against NE last week? I wonder what the over/under for that game was? the final score sure was closer than the game play indicated it should have been.

also, I heard that KC played an entire game last week with zero penalties called against them on both offense and defense. pretty rare, no? almost like the league or someone else did not want them starting the year at 2-4.

George Brett, Roger Clemens and Tommy Brady.

i love pro hoops, but i can trust it about as far as i can throw it. as Michael Franzese pointed out, not only are the players corrupt, but so are the refs. i'm sure he knew Tim Donaghy quite well. the allure of making easy money is too powerful when you're talking about a sport with only 5 players on the court per team. wanna make sure the Lakers don't cover the spread? saddle LeBron with 3 fouls in the first half and glue his ass to the bench. it's like taking candy from a baby. and now, we have a head coach involved.

i can't help but look at the clip i posted above and wonder what was going on. it just doesn't get much more blatant than that. a ref who was standing 5 feet away from Kevin Durant just stared and did absolutely nothing while he was trying to call an illegal timeout. did you need that extra 5 minutes so SGA could score 3 more points in double OT to hit your over on him, bro?

it's going to reach a point where we can't even enjoy a game anymore because every time we see an egregious call or no-call, our minds will go there

let's think about this logically. what happens if the Kansas City Chiefs do not make the playoffs? you could confront the most ignorant sports fan alive and they'd be able to tell you that it wouldn't be a good thing for the NFL. the amount of lost revenue from the absence of the league's most marketable team would be staggering. the millions of Swifties who would normally be tuning in would then turn to TikTok for those 3 hours per game. next thing you know, mysterious things start happening to the sub-.500 Chiefs and they improbably go entire games without being penalized. something that has happened 40 times since 2000.

as i said in the gambling thread, i trust no one. not the players, the refs, the coaches, or the leagues themselves. i may not be the sharpest knife in the drawer, but my momma didn't raise no stoopnagle.

The funny thing about these phantom calls and no calls is they help. some people while hurting others

Personally and I think everyone here agrees is that I want no. part of betting anything sports related and it being a 50/50 chance if I chose the right side of the referees or not

  • MCMLVToppsMCMLVTopps Posts: 5,035 ✭✭✭✭✭

Rozier makes $25m per season (6months), which is $305k per game (82 games).

It is stunning to think he would jeopardize such an income for a potential long term jail cell.

    You can't fix stupid!!

  • DarinDarin Posts: 7,349 ✭✭✭✭✭

Of course this would come down to the Chiefs. Personally I would like to know why KC has been flagged 47 times this year and their opponents only 41 times. It’s like the refs aren’t even trying to hide it anymore, they want anyone in the playoffs as long as it’s not the Chiefs.
Craig’s’ motivation for always calling out KC on stuff like this is clear, he wants them and Mahomes coming nowhere near Brady and the Pats records.
People with some common sense, I don’t know the motivation, a general paranoia I guess. Who knows?

  • DarinDarin Posts: 7,349 ✭✭✭✭✭

    One question?
If the refs are trying to help KC, why did they get called for 13 penalties against the jags?
Answer that in some small way that fits your narrative and maybe you can be taken seriously as a legitimate badge wearing dues paying conspiracy theorist.
