Stopped by the US Mint in Philadelphia today

Wasn’t closed, which was nice considering our federal government shutdown.

The first floor starts with a little display about gold coinage (pic below) and the story of the now closed branch mint locations of CC, C, O, D. The ground floor also houses the mint store. The mint store has the usual swag (books, coins, T-shirts, mousepads, medals, ornaments, and coin inspired jewelry). One ounce gold American Eagles list for just shy of $5k. One ounce Platinum eagles were low $2k. One ounce silver offerings (proof/privy) were in the $90-110 range. Didn’t see any Palladium.

The self guided tour was educational, and would be an excellent outing for any YNs you may be traveling with to the area.

On the second floor is a short movie showing Hamilton and Jefferson advocating for our new coinage in the late 1780s-early 1790s. The rest of the second floor is historic minting techniques- screw press, hammering out and weighing blanks by hand, etc.

On the third floor is a walking tour where you read about, see and touch various minting concepts, then you progress to glass paneled area where you have a fairly extensive Birds Eye view of the mint factory floor where you see the machines and workers producing your country’s coinage.

    I did the tour a few years (2019) ago and really enjoyed it. The mint store actually had 2016-2018 ASE and they were selling for the same price as in those years. I could have picked up ASE for $59-$69. Those days seem so long ago.

    If you live nearby you should try to go, I remember it being free. One thing I wasn’t allowed to take pictures.

    Yeah, I never thought the Mint offered tours and had a shop. Nice to know...

    The Mint Store off the main lobby is an outsourced store (maybe Aramark?), which is why you sometimes find things for sale in there for ridiculous prices. The contemporary mint offerings, however, are pretty much in line with what the Mint charges on their website.
