Got a call this weekend from a friend of mine who is an antique dealer in Connecticut. Said he had something I might have an interest in. I had a free day on Sunday, so after breakfast my wife and I headed down to the shop. I was blown away when I saw this beautiful cabinet that I envisioned to house and display some of my favorite coins and vintage silver bars. My wife must have had the same vision because before I knew it, she exclaimed…”he’ll take it”!

A little bit of history tied to this cabinet.
This was a gift to George W. Benham who was the warden of Auburn State Prison in New York from 1905 to 1913.
The brass plaque on the front reads…
“Presented to George W. Benham, agent and warden of Auburn State Prison 1905-1913, by the officers and employees of the mens and womens prisons at Auburn, NY. Mar. 15, 1913”.

Stamped beneath the bottom drawer….

I am over the moon to get this home and moved into my den this week. I will be sure to post some pictures once I get it situated and filled with some numismatic goodies.

Man, that is beautiful and totally cool. Not asking you to be specific, but was it reasonable?
Only issue is the obvious…. Keeping valuables that are worthy of such a beautiful display, vs the risk of doing so
Beautiful piece and the provenance gives it a story to match its beauty.
Beautiful Piece!
That's a nice piece to have 👍
Congratulations. Beautiful piece.
Thanks everyone!
I’m an antique geek so it’s priceless to me - I paid $260 out the door.
I completely agree with your sentiment. I will not be putting any high value coins, large bars or gold in this case. Those are elsewhere and somewhat of a pain to access. I plan on putting some slabbed common date silver dollars in it along with some type coins, some smaller sized silver bars and some currency. That way I can have quick access to a portion of my collection.
So cool. Auburn WA by any chance?

Very cool!
Auburn, New York.
Not auburn, ma either 😉
very COOL......
There may be some contaminants there that could damage silver and gold......
A bargain and beautiful. Perfect IMO for larger numismatic items and associated pieces. I buy older medals and some coins in their original cases with no cool place to access and display them. I’m envious.
The glass top is pretty cool too, It would look great with some currency from that era as well.

Cool item for sure. I always envision my coins in something like that.
Thanks for sharing it.

PS. Your lady is pretty cool as well. My wife also supports my passions. We’re lucky stiffs.
Yes we are!
We must have done something right. 👍

Wow. That is beyond beautiful. I wish it could talk, as I can only imagine the coins that once lived in there. What a bargain too! SCORE!
