2001-P Sacagawea Dollar - Counterfeiters Gather 'Round.

This one jumped out at me while searching some customer wrapped rolls.

The color is slightly off (looks kinda greenish in-hand).

The rim stands proud or the fields and devices seem more recessed.

The thickness of the coin is noticeably thinner.

No noticeable clad layer on the edge.

I see what looks like die cracks and chips... Can die chip be present in the fields? I've only really seen die chips on the devices not on the fields. I could be wrong.

The weight is 6.9g.

I can't tell if it's die struck or cast. Your thoughts?

You may be right. That weight is way too low.

    What is the diameter?

Good point. Hold on, I think I have a caliper down in the basement.

Well I found it. Now the problem is reading it. It's as corroded as most of my coins. I'll get back to you.

    i'm in early with counterfeit

you also need a micrometer to measure the thickness between fields obv&rev (i'll bet they are thinner)

using the edge comparison photo, the two inner coins are closest aligned. counterfeit on right and real on left. it is a tad larger in diameter and a tad thinner at the rim

due to the pimples, i'll say cast

I can barely see and read the caliper. The one on the right is the counterfeit. The one one the left is a normal Sacagawea. I guess this tells us they are both the same diameter.

Get some CLR at Home Depot and clean the rust off that caliper! 😉

That's one I don't have, a micrometer. It does look thinner. Something on this coin is absolutely thinner, due to the 6.9g weight.

“2001-P Sacagawea Dollar - Counterfeiters Gather 'Round.”

Why are you trying to summon counterfeiters? I would have thought that you kept better company than that.

Well, I wasn't really trying to summon counterfeits but I see your point. I could have worded it differently. Hey, maybe the title will bring in more curious readers. Unfortunately, counterfeits are a part of the numismatic community.

Isn't there also some kind of home remedy for taking rust off tools... Vinegar baking soda or something like that?

I've heard that rust can be taken off guns with oil and fine steel wool, but just a very light finessing, no scrubbing.

One could spend the time, effort, and energy to try and take the corrosion off of a precision tool... or... spend about $20 for a new digital caliper on Amazon... jussayin'

Looks like a struck counterfeit to me. Very interesting piece of modern numismatics.
