Saw an old tongue in cheek thread by the late, great contributor Russ.
Given my new direction and freedom via retirement, I got to wondering what qualities made up the best of the best in Vest Pocket Dealers.
Certainly connections and relationships are high on the list. Additionally, grading and market knowledge.
What about away from shows? Are the working their hustle at Pawn Shops, the few remaining B&M's, coin clubs, estate sales, auctions?
Any input appreciated

The very best are like my friend Brian. If you need to sell coins fast he will move them for you at a show or buy outright. If you want something reslabbed or whatever he will add it to his own submissions and charge you no insurance or shipping fees. In return he knows he is the first call you will make if selling something good and time is a factor. He does not hawk coins so no annoying sales calls. He does know your collecting interest so will give you a head up if something you might like is coming his way. A delicate fence to straddle but here is an example.
He knows a group of certified Seated dimes is being sold privately. He sends an e-mail of the coins being offered. That it. Rest is up to you. james PS have known guy over 40 years so that is a plus too.
I agree these are all great attributes.

Mark Feld was the best one I knew, when he was doing it.
Fair pricing, very knowledgeable, went to many large shows and had connections, great eye for coins and keeping accurate want lists as well as knowing what clients liked, and easy to get along with.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

They are very sharp, Professional, can be a sort of middleman / whosaler player - part of the bourse room food chain.
One guy really sharp (MBA in marketing) traveled a lot abroad in his real job. Got me nice bundles gem cu notes w animals on them great for my currency retail operation. One time some Vatican and Ireland coins I wanted, areas fascinated with.
They come by a dealers table with material at price allowing him flip make some money. They have good market knowledge and contacts. They do sometimes buy coins (could be from an estate the dealer acquired) possibly flip somewhere else. One many years ago would come by w nice BU world gold for me for retail inventory a lot of it slabbed. Real nice to have. Very affordable vs US. Sometimes Mexico Silver Libertads. Onetime some slabbed Commems (Oregon and Texas I wanted) at bid plus 5 pct or 7 pct for me purchase, then markup for retail. They sold well for me.
Connections, diligence, specialization and knowledge of the market..
