I just had 3 crowns replaced and was wondering,,,,,,,,

Is there an average purity that is used?

I have 5 grams.

It’s worth way more in the mouth than it is in the hand.

I was at a coin shop yesterday and they told me dental gold was 16-18K. I didn’t have it with me or I would have sold it

The older stuff is usually 16kt, the more recent stuff a bit less, also my refinery will no longer take the white dental as they have had a lot of problem with dentalite or other additives mixured in.

Turns out my dental gold was only 10k but it got me a cool $285.

My dentist wanted to keep it for themselves. She said they use it to pay for the office Christmas party.

Dental gold is much purer than .416. It is between 65-70% pure. Whoever convinced you it was 42% pure just said that to avoid paying a fairer market value of $360. Of course, $285 is more than fair since 5 grams of 10k is only worth $225.

I heard 10K was the most common dental gold so it was hard enough to not get nicked up.

A web search said dental gold is usually about 16K or 2/3 gold and 1/3 alloy. It also said it can vary from 10K to 22K.

Really depends on when it was made. Older fillings and crowns will be higher gold content 65-75%, while more modern white colored fillings will be 10-25% gold with more silver and palladium.

My friend has this whole piece from the 1970's or earlier to bring to the diamond district (NYC)--unless there's a better option. I hate to even look at it. But there's a ton of gold in it. She will have to process it first with a hammer.

Wow, 4 tooth bridge in gold on both side of upper.

I would break that up before he takes it in. You don’t want the buyer to guess how much the non-gold portion weights. They won’t guess low…

I cleaned my dental gold and routinely sold it as 18k. It tested 18k. Cleaning it is imperative to getting top dollar.
I used to buy it from my dentist. But, he gets fewer and fewer crowns made of gold. Batches became so small I gave up.

We always figured yellow dental at about 16k.
Some older crowns were higher karat.
Back in the 20th century when palladium was dirt cheap, a lot of yellow dental contained some portion of palladium.

During the Hunt Brothers silver run up around 1980, gold also ran up to right around $1,000 an ounce. I was working at a coin shop in Laurel, Maryland and we had lines out the door from opening to closing. Among the silver ware, silver cremation urns (yes we made them remove the ashes before we bought them), school rings, silver candle sticks, and such, we had a lady come in with a cloth tobacco bag that she said he got from her Grandfather right after World War II. She said he told stories of plucking the gold teeth out of the mouths of dead and dying Japanese soldiers. This bag full weighed several ounces but before we could buy it I had to take dental picks and pick out the teeth from the gold. I can't remember the fineness, but I think it was around 10K or so and she ended up with quite a few bucks in cash. I wonder how many more bags of teeth are hanging around in Granddad's old foot locker. I personally wouldn't be proud to admit to taking the teeth out of folks mouths, even during a war.

Hi Dan - I'm retired now 10 years and haven't dealt with that for some time - some have told the facts - 16-18K and right now? I would guess around 2500 per ounce would be top of the mark? - and yes - I would remove the acrylic for a more accurate weight without a guesstimate?

I had a gold crown done on me and the lab fee alone with over 400 bucks!

I wonder how many funeral home undertakers remove the gold teeth from the body that they are processing for burial. It's not like any family members are going to pry the deceased's mouth open to look inside if there's an open coffin viewing.

I think the value of dental gold depends on where it’s located. If it’s in my mouth then the value to me is double what the market value is but if it’s in my desk drawer then it’s worth a lot less.
