Dansco 7070 inconsistent hole size

BikingnutBikingnut Posts: 3,438 ✭✭✭✭

Just wondering how many out there have noticed that some of the coins fit very tightly and others have a lot of slop for lack of a better word.

I just added an 1818 Coronet large cent and as you can see in the photo, there is a lot of gap.

I have an 1809 capped bust half that I was ready to get a hammer out and pound it into the hole. Anyone else working on a 7070 notice this?

Yes, @oih82w8 and I were just talking about this. Same issue. I had to make a plastic spacer to keep the coin from spinning.

Since we're playing show and tell...this is from my 7070 of fakes.

The ID of the album is quite a bit larger than the OD of the coin.

I've completed 2@7070's and lack only the seated$ to finish my 3rd. I've noticed similar issues with the copper in all but no other. So I feel it is maybe an irregularity in blank size plus what happened to coin while in circulation. Then that's just an opinion.

Generally, it is a matter of the individual planchets. There are some legitimate cases where Dansco, Whitman, and Littleton do mess up the hole sizes or are just not properly consistent for the respective types, and then there is the data for diameters which itself can vary from source to source. I personally err on the larger side of the range.

Both early cents and lettered edge capped bust half dollars were struck with an open collar, with about a 1mm tolerance in diameter. Early date lettered edge bust halves are larger in diameter than the later years. The dansco hole sizes are on the larger side to fit most coins.

You can cut a thin strip of cardboard (think the hard backing of a legal pad), and wrap it around the large cent so it fits snuggly in the 7070 hole.

That’s what I did years ago and it is barely noticeable. Best of all, the large cent stays in place and doesn’t spin.
