Mint stamp question

Still stumbling, painstakingly, through the few thousand Indian and Lincoln wheats left to me.
Happened to notice a pair of 1956 D's that have different locations on the 'D' mint mark. One is almost between the 9 & 5. The other is clearly below.

Is this normal? A stamping error?

Toss in the worthless pile, or are these little twins something uncommon?

Mint marks were hand punched into dies until 1990. You'll find small variations of mint mark placement pretty frequently.

Gotcha. And I appreciate the info. Still very green and learning. :)

As a footnote, if it interests you then by all means keep it. It doesn't always have to be about value.

There is a 1975D nickel that has a ridiculously placed mintmark that sells for a big premium.

Yours is not in that league, but it is a great example of a rather high mintmark.

One of the 1956-D dies with a very high mintmark actually has a second faint D entirely separated below the first one. Your pics aren't clear enough for me to say for sure that's what you have. But unlike most examples, I don't see anything to rule yours out either.

Yours wouldn't have much value in that condition even if it is the variety. It would at least be worth a huh! though.
