GTG: 1873 Indian Head Cent

Hello everyone!

As I’ve just received grades for a recent submission, I thought I would do a GTG for a few coins. Since I already have this particular coin imaged (my images) that makes it easy to start here. I will add the TrueViews when available so aid in your decision making.

Thanks!

64BN, just a little chatter on the chin and neck keeps it from a 65; otherwise that is a very attractive better date IHC.

Are you using a ring light?

No, I'm still playing around with my lighting setup here...been a busy time and just haven't had the energy to devote to improving it. My pics of the 1937 DDO Quarter were, IMO, pretty subpar, for example.

I did try a ring light for a bit, was pretty unsatisfied with the results. Honestly...I feel like the best lighting setup I had was the few Ikea Jansjo LED lights haha...

I'm sure the TrueViews will make the coin look a lot closer to what it does in hand. I'm especially looking forward to seeing a few coins from this submission, actually.

Can you post the Trueview when possible? I was between RB and BN for a little and I think another set of pics might sway me in one direction more.

I definitely will - they weren't available just yet. Just know the grades at this point.

You have a very ring-light-ish result.

Try moving the lights more to 9-12-3 so the light is coming more from the top down. This should prevent the flat look you're getting.

Which is more accurate, in your opinion?
The images you took look more natural to me.
The TVs are nice, but make the color look borderline AT/QT.

I'll have to let you know when the coin arrives back from PCGS. IIRC, my photos didn't quite capture the color as well as I'd have liked, but IMO the TrueViews look a little bit juiced compared to my memory. So I guess my answer is...somewhere in the middle?

I'll stay out of the gtg, as I seem to immediately be drawn to what appears to me to be slight wear on ribbon, leaves and perhaps even hair. Too many knowledgeable people disagree, so I bow to them.
Very nice RB Open 3 IHC.

How about a grade reveal? Feels like we've gotten enough responses that there isn't much need to keep everyone waiting.

Quite a few of you went in the MS64 camp - and to be honest, that's what I thought the coin would come back as. Local people at my main LCS were highly interested in buying this coin when I bought it raw 3 yrs ago, but at the time wouldn't even pony up MS64 money for it. I wasn't too concerned, as I felt it deserved a shot at TPG certification before even considering selling anyway.

That being said, again, I thought it would be a 64. The mark on the neck, plus the little disturbance in the field in front of the portrait that shows up in pictures but not so much in hand, made me feel it wouldn't make a gem grade. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see my coin as the newest MS66BN at PCGS:

Sincere thanks to all who stopped by for whatever reason. Very grateful for your time and knowledge - I'll admit I was very picky about which coins I sent in for grading, and I was more often than not much more harsh than PCGS ended up - to the point where I felt I could really use some improvement in my grading skills!

Life is a process of learning, and this has been a fun one overall so far.

well there, very nice, I went of your poor juiced attempt (lol) of a photo in op message, obviously no way is this RB, and actually looks better in the reveal.
    You did good here.
