Help settle a debate

Got a few rolls from the bank this morning. They were all 2025 - P except this one. Great shape for a 33 year old quarter. Best I've found outside of a LCS or show, so I kept it.

While showing a friend tonight he was adamant this was PL and I should send it out. Wouldn't hear anything I had to say otherwise. Tried to tell him this is a great business strike somewhere around MS63/64. Told him the mark under the "T" and next to the neck bun would prevent it from getting anything higher. And unless this was a guarantee 66+ and up it's not worth it.

So please settle this so he can buy me a beer.

Nice for the age and from a roll/circulation, but not PL and not worth the costs of submission. But if he wants to foot the submission bill do let us know how it goes.

Tell him to pay the grading fees - If it comes back hi-grade then you'll reimburse him. It's always easy to spend other people's money. :D

It depends which image, if any, accurately captures the coin’s appearance. To me, it looks PL in each one other than the last.

Having done the clad set a few times, this IS one of those years that PL coins are known to exist. It DOES have an appearance that could look like a PL coin but it is difficult to tell based on images. It does look it could have quite exceptional surfaces too, given that it was in a roll.

I would definitely put it in a 2x2 and save it. I would look at several graded clad quarter images to try and determine if its worth submission later. You could always raise the stakes for the bet to at least cover the cost of a modern submission!

  • Thanks everyone who answered. As of right now he supplied beers for the game today. This will sit in my collecting in a 2x2. He read the comments and still thinks it should be sent off. Told him if he wants to pay for it that's great and that he will get back to me on that. I personally don't believe this will grade higher than a MS64, so to me its not worth sending off at all.

You are correct. But it IS a great looking find from the wild.

Thanks! My guess would be this was part of an Uncirculated set that was broken up. Couldn't have been in the wild for long.

It looks close to PL to me (maybe semi-pl) and is a great roll find. I have not found any recent sales besides this one from 2020. I do not think the market has shifted enough from this $21 sale to make it worth submitting (grading fees alone would be $30+ when considering shipping/handling/grading).
