Heritage Auction tonight seemed to yield strong prices for coins in old holders

I noticed a lot of OGH and rattlers were selling really, really well. I had my eye on a Morgan OGH in 64. PCGS retail is $700 and CAC price is $875. This one sold for almost $1000 and it didn’t even have a sticker! I couldn’t justify it, so I backed off. Glad I picked up some old slabs, when I was able to. I still look for them and buy them, when they’re not too crazy. :p Have you guys been noticing this? Even more so than in the past?

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Very strong prices indeed. I won two PCGS OGH coins; one for less than retail and one, surprisingly, for Greysheet. But most of the coins I was watching went for extraordinary prices:
    -- a PCGS 1938-D MS66 Buffalo for $94
    -- a PCGS 1937-S MS65 Walker for $840
    -- a PCGS 1946-S MS65 Walker for $660
    -- a PCGS 1880-S MS65 Morgan for $324
    -- a PCGS 1853 AU58 gold dollar for $516
    -- a PCGS 1889 AU55 gold dollar for $504

Yes the ogh and rattlers can attract bids. I just move on to the World Gold 19th century area or US Classic Commems.

I won this for my old holder 1909 65rb set. Can’t find a rattler.

    Nor do I.

I have a huge array of rattlers. Bought as well as got them from PCGS a long time ago back in the late 1980’s.

I’m just flabbergasted by the popularity and serious collecting of different types of slabs, stickers, the interest in “ crossing over “ to obtain a higher grade, even a + sign. Gad !

Whatever happened to collecting rare or scarce or type coins. Can it be because the hobby has gotten so expensive or so ego- driven : “ my coin is better than your coin “ ?

Collecting plastic holders and various stickers, indeed ! Oh, for the pre-1986 days when you HAD to KNOW coins or currency , grading and counterfeits ! You had to be knowledgable.

    Collecting seriously for 68+ years

If you're trulylooking for consistency, remove the "PQ" and the CAC stickers, pronto! :p
