Do coins dropped on the ground (on dirt/lawn) tend to sink into the earth over the years?
Usually, but not always. I’ve dug modern coins at seven inches and an 1829 half dime at barely a quarter of an inch down, in the grassroots. Depends on the environment and soil.
Collector since 1976. On the CU forums here since 2001.
