1964 Kennedy FS-801 - DDR - Saved from the melting pot

I acquired several rolls of "junk" half dollars yesterday from a local dealer. As always, I search "junk" rolls for varieties and errors. I'm always amazed at what gets turned in and ends up in dealer junk silver rolls. I pull very nice BU Franklins and numerous BU 1964 Kennedy halves from dealer junk rolls all the time. Yesterday I pulled a nicely toned 1964 Kennedy and as per usual, I examined it with my 10x loupe. I was happily surprised to find it was a tough FS-801, DDR variety. The variety shows very nice doubling of the STARS and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. STATES shows the most doubling, especially the T's. I took a couple pics. My skills and camera are novice at best, but you should be able to see the doubling, especially on the stars. Enjoy!

Doubled dies are actually pretty easy to find on 1964 P&D Kennedys.

DDO's are pretty easy to find. DDR's are much more difficult to find.

Pop of 19 at PCGS and a pop of 1 at NGC for this DDR. Compared to the DDO which is well over 100. I would not call that easy!

The slab pop is not the actual pop. If the market isn't there, they don't get submitted.

No matter what the "others" think, I think you made a great find! Over 20 years ago I made a 1964 DDR FS-801in MS 65. Back then it WAS a POP 1, When I got it back it had a short written note from David Hall. It described it just like in the current description. It's extremely rare but easy to spot, people just weren't looking. I've been looking for the coin you found for years. CONGRATULATIONS!!!

You only live life once, enjoy it like it's your last day. It just MIGHT be!
