    Supply and demand?

Perhaps some collect fancy numbers (less common dates) while others collect fancy letters (less common mintmarks)

    Popularity trumps scarcity every time.

  • I guess I really was referring to buyers of ASE rolls.

I bet 75%+ of those Ebay roll buyers do not even realize there are privy marked ASEs with just 5-10% of the mintages of non privy marked ASEs they are buying.

I would also bet 80-90% could not tell a regular strike from a burnished strike...............

A loot of the low mintage modern commeratives are so cheap because there is no demand for them.

    Because they are not popular.

You cannot simply compare proofs to business strikes. There are plenty of people who ignore proofs in any series.

There's also no reason why anyone has to assign a premium to a "privy mark".

It's supply and demand. The market is what it is. If you think it should be different, play the other side of the trade. But more fortunes are lost than made by swimming against the market.
