Broken R 1936 Cent?

MaineJimMaineJim Posts: 785 ✭✭✭✭✭

I stopped in my bank a while back and a teller mentioned she had a bunch of old cent rolls with dates on them. She said they were old so I bought them all. They were as advertised, teen's & 20's, 30's, 40, and many others including one that said 1936 & 37. They were all a circulation collection someone had collected. I was reviewing the 36's and found an odd one with the R missing a leg. Google revealed that there is a 36 DDO with a "Broken Leg". I didn't think the coin was that but thought I'd see what others thought. Anyone familiar with this or was it just a Youtube click bait?

@MaineJim that looks like a DDO. DDO-FS-101 IMHO.

This was the link to the google search that had the info on the Broken R video I stumbled on. .

I was searching about the missing leg of the R to see if it was a thing to look for on the 1936 when it came up in a search.

This is the FS-101, courtesy of CoinFacts.

The hub for 1936 broke partway through the production of dies for 1936, resulting in the broken R for some master dies. These are not doubled but will show the damaged letter. The FS-101 doubled was created with one impression from a perfect hub and one from a damaged hub. In the above photos, it is apparent that the left leg of the R is not doubled.

Would these broken R's just be called Damaged Hub coins? I didn't see the doubling either so it made me wonder if they had another designation.

    Thanks - Jim

Yes, but these are common with minimal value.

Listen to the experts @MaineJim. Sorry for the misleading advice. I was just trying to give my best opinion, but I'm not knowledgeable in any way.

No problem - just an example coin for the random coin notebook. I thought it was just wear and tear from circulation. Learn something new here everyday!

What makes you think it is a DDO?
