1965 Lincoln cent special mint

Just wondering if this is a special mint variety, it's super shiny with mirror finish and in great shape and if it's worth anything should I get it graded

Special mint set coins are worth less than regular business strikes in the same grade. Your coin is not high grade and worth no more than one cent. It has too many marks to grade highly enough to justify the $35 grading fees.

Taken at face value, his comment didn’t strike me as rude. Now I’m wondering why it hit a nerve.

TO be fair a PCGS 1965 lincoln cent in MS66 RD is only $26. You cant compare a 66 grade SMS to a 67+ non SMS

That says it all. But you can buy one already graded, for less than $35. The premium for buying a graded coin vs an ungraded coin is actually less than the cost of grading, in many cases. The real costs of grading include the shipping, the time involved, and insurance. I wish PCGS would lower that threshold barrier to getting some less than perfect coins graded.

That seems ridiculous, but I understand the logic. Scarcity vs Perfection/ Personally I would rather own the SMS 67+ and keep the $3635 to take a nice vacation or something.

If I had the coin and was planning on getting it graded, I'd be less inclined to go for it.

The comparison is actually one of scarcity and quality (near “perfection”) vs. quality (near “perfection”).

Thanks, had I known (how to use CoinFacts?), I would have used that.

Edit: Looked to see my error—I used the CAM and forgot to put it on my caption—not defending my slackness.

Good job, the OP and I learned that there is more to it than just “shiny”.
