    The color portrayed by a photo can be misleading. There is no certain way to tell from the photo color if it is copper-nickel or bronze. I have seen copper-nickel cents that I would label "RB".

    Agreed. Just a side note from my personal experience is that the 1864 bronze portrait, looks pretty much like the 1864 copper/nickel version. Looks as though the dies in 1865 were changed and remained the same until the 1870’s.

    Ok, well it’s been over 24 hours and no one guessed correctly, even though Clackamas1 said 65, it is a bronze version and needed the color designation. Didn’t think it would be that difficult so here’s the answer and I’ll post a new coin too. The coin is an 1864 bronze, no L, rounded bust in MS65 RB.

    Don’t know if you collect and/or are familiar with FE cents, but that is a choice brilliant uncirculated specimen, graded so by PCGS and also acknowledged as same by CAC, as an appropriately graded near gem. You’re entitled to your opinion but know that a 64 is not a 65. The coin has superior eye appeal in hand.

    Everyone is so far off I am going to call it and I will post another. I picked this coin because I was looking to buy one of the 89-CC's that just came up. I was traveling and missed the auction but in my research I found this coin and I was taken aback by the grade. The photo below is the only photo of the slab that I could find and the coin has since upgraded to --- drum roll -** MS68+.** Sold on Jan 9, 2009 for: $531,875.00 I still don't know how to process it.

    This is more pedestrian. I love this coin since it was my first auction purchase gold that I was confident enough to crack. Guess the initial grade then the grade after resubmission and did it CAC. e.g. PO1/PO1+/bean

    Sold again in 2013 for 881,250 as a 68.
    Mintage: 350,000 so there's still hope.

    Well, I wasn't "so far off" (I guessed MS67) ;)
    The high grade is probably due, in part, to the original "un-dipped" state of the coin.

    PS:
    The coin looked slightly familiar to me and so right after posting my guess I went to Heritage Auctions and it was easy to find there. So if an image is posted with the "Imaged by Heritage Auctions, HA.com" showing, then it would be fairly easy for someone to "cheat" by going there to look.
