Is this a genuine Buffalo?

Just saw this on the bay and despite the damage it just does not look real to me.
Thoughts?

The end of the tail looks off, even accounting for the damage. It should be up higher on the hip. The surface of the obverse in front of the Chief’s nose also looks suspect.
Otherwise it may have just been run over by several Model Ts in a parking lot….😉

It almost looks like a poor cast with bubbles to me. That is a strange surface in front of the nose and around the nose compared to the rest of it.

the scrape over the Indian ear does not look like something you see on nickels.

Motor grader or D7 dozer is my guess.

I would not buy it. Looks terrible. Go save up for a circulated, well worn, graded example.

Your suspicions are correct. A genuine buffalo has hair and would not have survived that leg wound.

Looks like a mashed up genuine 1913-D Type 2 to me.

    What a shame!

Yeah looks genuine to me too. I would rather have an acid treated coin as a "space filler" than that one.

That coin is SOOO wiped out I don’t think it even matters, does it? I’ve been collecting buffalo nickels almost all of my life and I can tell you with all certainty it just doesn’t matter. But, if I had to make a call I’d say it’s genuine but it doesn’t matter unless you are going to sell it or spend it.

Idk. It would probably be more interesting as a counterfeit. Lol

Note the removed mount, I can't imagine anyone soldering something on to a counterfeit just to remove it so it looks more believable.

You have a wounded buffalo variety my friend. It appears that the buffalo was a victim of extreme road rage!

I’ll resist the temptation to make a smart aleck post with a photo of an actual live Buffalo with the caption “no, this is a genuine Buffalo” and instead just post the joke in a more passive way by writing the very sentence you are reading.
