Excited to Join the Collectors Universe Community – My First US Coin Adventure!

Hello everyone!
I’m thrilled to be part of the Collectors Universe family and eager to learn, share, and connect with fellow US coin enthusiasts. As a newcomer to the hobby, I’ve just started my journey into the fascinating world of American coinage, and I wanted to introduce myself with a bit about my first steps.
Although I’m more old-school and don’t have pictures to share right now, I’ve recently begun collecting some interesting coins from different eras—mainly focusing on early 20th-century pieces. My current favorite is “1922 Peace Dollar”, which I picked up from a local estate sale. The history behind these coins really sparks my curiosity—each one feels like holding a tiny piece of America’s story.
I’d love to hear your advice for a beginner and learn about your most memorable finds. What’s the first coin that hooked you? Do you have any tips for someone starting out with limited resources?
Looking forward to engaging with all of you and building my collection alongside this fantastic community!
Thanks for having me,
Proud

I recall getting a 1922 Peace dollar when I was young, maybe in my Xmas stocking?
Definitely a classic US coin.
Howdy and welcome to the hobby-industry and to the PCGS boards. There are a significant number of members who are leaders in this hobby-industry and who are happy to help.
Since you are new and asking for help, I would suggest to pick up a copy of the Red Book. They come out every year, but truly you only need to buy one every decade or two. Read it, understand it and read it again. It should help with lots on questions and ideas.
Good luck!

Appreciate the lead i will get this book
Welcome aboard
I would recommend reading a lot and doing research before making purchases. Buy what you like, but buy with prior research whenever possible.
For common coins recent price history can be searched on eBay to give a market value idea for stuff.
Buying graded coins is not required but really helps with authenticity and protection. Particularly for more expensive coins.
Happy hunting

Just got this PM from the OP.
“ Hey! Noticed your post about needing a Gold CAC Walking Liberty Half Dollars . A contact named Eric mentioned he has it. You can email him at ericvincent039@gmail.com. Just passing along the lead—hope it helps!”
This is known scam.
"Got a flaming heart, can't get my fill"
My first thought when I read the original post was, "this looks fake; I wonder how long until we find out which banned member this is".
Especially with “kaka” for a name!

Just got the same scam PM!!
there will be lots of free advice.
Never mess with a coin, no cleaning, no nothing.
Hold a coin by the edges as fingerprints will show up later and kill the value.
Collect what you like and can afford, even if it's from pocket change.
Get a scale (off ebay and under $10) that measures two digits to the right of zero.
Get the Redbook (as above mentioned)
Get a pocket loupe at least 4x but not necessary to go above 10x.
If you do mishandle a coin by accident, just a few seconds in pure acetone is the cure (not nail polish). It's available at your CVS or Walgreens.
Some modern pocket change is worth looking for and the Redbook can guide you. But, for instance, a 1982 no mintmark dime is a real keeper.
Good luck,
bob
PS: I stared with Lincoln cents and nickels.
I think a couple of people skipped over the scam posts before they replied.
Didn't waste any time outing him/herself.

Never a slave to one plastic brand will I ever be.
I just got the same post about a coin I was looking for. I got something similar from another person who hacked a long-time member on Coin Talk. Shy away from this individual.

Have you read any of the other posts in this thread? 🤨
His idea of "fun" is ripping us off.
Slow down, doggies. There ain’t to rush to answer a fool. Here’s a sign: there are at least three banned members, generating alts, who remain determined to bait members with their enthusiasm for the hobby horse that they ride.
Not even a pic..
Another n00b with a love for coins, finds a peace dollar and wants to hear old men’s’ tales?
Welcome to the forum. My first coin back when I was a kid was a 1921 Morgan. RGDS!

Wooooha! Did someone just say it's officially "TACO™" Tuesday????
Not a problem. Just require the seller to send you the coin for examination prior to payment.

I've never figured out the "ignore" feature. how does that work? James
In order to do that:
Click on the person’s username.
See the small blue icon to the right of “Message” in the upper right corner of the picture below .
Click on it.
That will bring up the option to “Ignore”.
Making the selection will result in posts from that forum member not being visible. However, you can always go through the same process to undo the “Ignore”.

This is not our typical troll, the initial post is an ai-generated introduction and the op and his “buddies” are in Lagos or Bangalore in a sultry, run down holiday inn. Any funds would be routed through a chain of an accounts and converted and then converted into cryptocurrency, never to be recovered.

Some very good info given already. I might add that upon studying the new redbook, you may pick a series you like or have interest in. Then, get a good book for just that series. Please read the books info no just the prices or attributions. Good luck and welcome.

@jesbroken, Jim, you continue to post as if you haven't read the posts about multiple scamming attempts from the person to whom you're trying to give helpful advice.

This really has been a very good informational thread. I've learned how little attention some people pay. I'll try to remember that the next time I get irritated and start to argue.

Between it sounding AI generated and a 1922 Peace Dollar being the OPs favorite coin this is a crock of (use your imagination).
