Bill Belichick's UNC coaching debut ends in blowout home loss to TCU

Bill Belichick had a "welcome to college football" moment on Monday night, as his North Carolina Tar Heels were blown out by the TCU Horned Frogs, 48-14, to begin the 2025 college football season.

It was a night filled with expectation, celebrity appearances and pure hype at Kenan Stadium, as Belichick’s first taste of being a college football head coach started on home turf in Chapel Hill. The Tar Heels were hoping to usher in a new era with a victory to not only notch another first under Belichick’s resume, but get the program heading in the right direction from the jump.

The Horned Frogs had another thing in mind, though, as they were fazed by the screaming crowd of over 50,000, which included the likes of Randy Moss, Michael Jordan, Roy Williams, Lawrence Taylor and many more.

Of course everyone is asking the same question. How will this affect the relationship between Belichick and Jordon? 😂

It's only the first game and TCU was favored so there is that, it might be the only thing potentially going for him though

But looking at it from my perspective we got Bills age, his girlfriend and his first year in the college game as a coach just spells out disaster

Some people say College is harder than the NFL with all the recruiting and the transfer portal, I don't think Bill committed as much to this as he did the NFL all those years.

He could end up running the table and being a power house, we don't know just yet but I'm willing to bet it's a disaster in UNC

I really hate to compare the two, but Belichick going to college football might be like Steve Spurrier going to the pros.

Yes, of course there's been countless numbers of hiss poor NFL coaches over the years. But Spurrier was by far the worst I've ever seen. I watched some of the NFL games he coached, and it was like a circus out there. I mean this guy didn't even know some of the NFL rules for crying out loud.

I don't believe Belichick is quite as bad as Spurrier in this "fish out of water" analogy. However because of Belichick's age, I think Belichick closes the gap with Spurrier. His age of 73 is no time to begin an exhaustive new venture such as this.

I've always liked Belichick, but this was a mistake which probably won't end until the season is over. When he should admit this wasn't a good idea and walk away.

  • MCMLVToppsMCMLVTopps Posts: 5,035 ✭✭✭✭✭

Not only is he 73, he has a net worth of $70m. Why on earth would you put yourself into such a frying pan and abuse when your team fails...instead of touring the world like a king with your 50 year younger travelling companion???

If I had his $$$ I'd buy at least 500 acres in Montana on a beautiful trout stream. I'd have a 2500 foot grass strip to fly in and out of my private airport with my gorgeous 1943 Stearman biplane. I would be very hard to find, except for the annual picnic, hiring the Dave Matthews band, who'd play till sunup. Perkdog would have my #, and he'd organize the annual bash, free everything.

How sweet is this...life should be so cool.

They have one of the easiest schedules in the power 4 if not the easiest. They only have one ranked team on the schedule with Clemson. They avoid Miami, Louisville, FSU, And GT, giving them the softest schedule in the ACC. Their out of conference games UCF should be the only challenge. Charlotte or Richmond I will fall out of my chair laughing if they lose either.

They will get more wins than they should from the schedule but they definitely arent running the table

If he keeps starting Lopez over Johnson they might be fighting for a bowl game at best. TCU has the second hardest schedule in the Big 12, but unless they pull another Cinderella season theyre expected to be fighting for a bowl game as well.

I guess we now know who was primarily responsible for making the Patriots good for many years. It was Brady, not Belichick. Belichick showed at the end of his professional career that he could not work with young players. He’s in the wrong job. He needs to be accepting his Hall of Fame trophy. As a coach, he’s washed up.

Bookies showing Belichick some love this Saturday.

On the road -13.5 point favorite against the Charlotte 49ers.

Jordon might be very happy after the game. She may be heard saying, "Bill darling, I was just kidding about leaving you if you lost this game."

Whatever Belichick does in this college experiment, doesn't affect or diminish at all his record with the Patriots.

But I agree with ya, this college thing, especially at his age, is crazy. Although very likely he wins the game tomorrow.

Yea, Belichick gets credit for his years in New England, but as soon as Brady left, the Patriots went to pot. Toward the end of the Brady era, Belichick had a bad habit of dumping young players for what seemed to be trivial reasons. The manager also had a hard time finding receivers. In one of his last games, Brady had no one who could get open. The last touchdown I saw him throw was to a tackle eligible trick play.

If they lose to Charlotte he should be fired on the spot.

Hes such a terrible head coach though that its been reported hes banning Pats scouts from practices. All the does is hurt his own players.

Agreed but Ill fall out of my chair laughing if they do. App State is solid for what level they are and dominated them last week.

Anything less than 7-5 will be pathetic for UNC with how easy their schedule is

Can't disagree with ya. I'm basing my call on if Belichick has any of the "past" Bill Belichick still in him. Yes, 73 years old is old for a head coach, especially a new head coach in a new situation such as this. He is way over his head in this thing.

However in this upcoming game, after that brutal loss, i just think he will get the juices flowing again, do some hard core coaching like he used to do, rally his players, and win this game, possibly easily.

As for the games after this one? The answer is blowing in the wind. LOL

Realistically his GF could coach that game and should still win easily the talent gap with UNC and Charlotte is so wide.

Theyll be 2-1 with another HS quality team in Richmond the next week. UCF looked terrible in their opener so they may go 3-1 but can just go ahead and put in that loss against Clemson the next week. Cal, UVA, NC State, Duke can all beat them.

I think theyre probably going to drop at least one they should win. He doesnt look like he wants to be there other than his GF wants him there. Hes going to start losing guys to the transfer portal and preserving their redshirts if they lose faith in him

I forget the exact details, but he had some previous connection to the school, or his Dad did, whatever it was.

Michael Jordan attended Belichick's first game. Wasn't much of a happy ending. But I'd be sure that Jordan also got in a few rounds of golf while he was there. Probably got hustled out of a few hundred thou like he usually does.

The Pac 12 (really the Pac 8) is not and will not be considered a power conference again. Its not exactly like European football but close.

Basically what happened was the Pac 12 had really just god awful commissioners for many years. One even so bad that when Texas and Oklahoma tried to join when the Big 12 was in trouble they said no to two of the most lucrative programs in the nation. They also spend an absurd amount of money on their headquarters in SF which is more than the SEC/B!G spends combined meaning schools get less money.

Their TV deal came up and they wanted SEC/B!G money and the networks laughed at them. The Big 12 said they would take the deal that was offered to the Pac 12 and that left the Pac 12 basically with streaming and the CW for their offers which were terrible.

Southern Cal and UCLA jumped ship to the B!G which really took away their power for TV deals. A bunch of teams then went to the Big 12 and Stanford and Cal went to the ACC. The tv deals were so bad that were being offered Oregon and Washington begged to get into the B!G so much that they agreed to share a media deal meaning they are making half of what other teams are.

Washington State and Oregon state were all that was left and no one wanted them. The conference will continue since they picked up a bunch of mountain west teams, but its days of being a power conference are over

No surprise that UNC is underwhelming under this guy. Bill Belichick’s success with the Patriots was one simple reason - Tom Brady. Nothing more, nothing less. I laughed when UNC hired him - what were they thinking? No surprise here that they lose by big margins……………..

the guy wanted to keep coaching, but no team in the NFL was going to stoop knowing full well that the game had passed him by

so he was relegated to the collegiate level where a desperate fat girl named UNC was waiting on him

and not only is he not winning, but his team isn't even competitive. the 3 legit FBS schools they've played thus far have outscored them by a combined 120-33.

    can't say i'm surprised

and since we're on the subject of not winning, notice how no one speaks of Deion Sanders anymore? remember in '23 when he was talking all sorts of noise after they beat TCU in his first game? "We're coming....."

yeah, you're coming all right. fast forward to today..........he has a losing record there (15-16)

    Perfectly stated.

But Belichick doesn't care. He's rich. And he gets to frolic around with his obvious gold digger girlfriend who is 1/3 his age. And he gets to hang with the cheerleaders and coeds. Possibly scope out his next score, and I don't mean on the football field.

I think part of the reason Belichick took the job was to get his son in there, thought I read where that was part of it

Deion is being talked about but for unfortunate reasons. Hes having blood clot surgery again today. It is very true though that the media way over hyped Colorado from the Sanders marketing machine. Hunter was a part too since they had the best player in the country, they just didnt have much after that.

For Belli everyone could see he was going to be a disaster. He doesnt care and his gf was doing recruiting make of that what you will. She wanted him coaching as well to make more money and make herself a star.

The plan was for Belli to get a bunch of players and build the program up for his son to take over, that plan is in jeopardy now hes been so bad. Hulu cancelled their documentary series on the season theyve been so bad and the signs are piling up that UNC is getting sick of his nonsense. He had UNC accounts banned from posting about Maye because hes on the Pats and those accounts are starting to post about him again.

Including this year UNC owes him 30 million total if they fire him before December 2027. I wouldnt put it past him to intentionally trying to be fired. They just arent even competitive against decent to good teams
